Episode 56: Billy Harvey

Wednesday Mar 28, 2012

Wednesday Mar 28, 2012

hello everyone! i have had a very interesting week. the last album i put out, "el payaso", has been lost in some legal issues with the label that put it out. the legal issues were internal because of a soured partnership. anyway, the legal issues were worked out and i got the masters back and 600 copies. i am so excited!!!! i loved that album and felt like the timing, label-wise, was terrible. now i have it back. i can sell it at shows. i don't really know what all i will do with it. but the possibilities are very exciting to me. also, i will be playing a solo this sunday at hotel vegas in austin. come and buy one there!!! if you're in austin, here's the info...
johnny goudie solo show - 7pm sunday, april 1st - hotel vegas- 1500 East 6th Street - opening for danny malone
my guest for episode 56 is one of my favorite musicians/funny people, billy harvey. billy moved to l.a. a few years ago and so it was nice to get together and catch-up! i found out he was in town from someone on facebook saying they were going to his show. i got in touch with him and he came by the apartment before his show. i'm glad we got to sit down and catch-up. we talked about being socially awkward, moving around a lot, his first bands, the l.a. hard rock scene, playing guitar and producing several acts including, bob schneider, charlie mars and many more, making a documentary film with the camera on his laptop, working hard as an actor and making two full-length films. you can find billy on facebook and you can see his very entertaining website www.billyharveymusic.com. i'm glad billy got to stop by. i really enjoyed our conversation. i hope you do too.

hi everyone! welcome to sxsw part 2: electric boogaloo. i got to spend a couple of days at sxsw tagging along with my friends from new york to their shows. i had a blast! i got to see black taxi around four times. sounds weird, but i really love watching a band play multiple shows a day to see what changes as the day goes on. on thursday and friday both, deadbeat darling and black taxi rocked it. through bad sound systems on makeshift stages to the big, pro stage these bands delivered every time. it was exciting!
so, for this podcast, i got to interview a couple of members of the  20-plus person band, mother falcon. i talked to ezra from black taxi and samantha rex from the attic ends (both from brooklyn) together because it seemed like these brooklyn kids really look out for and support each other and i really liked that. i also got to interview my old friend and former bandmate, brad byram from blondes make better victims. the best interview on here is with a man named, g.o.a.t. who was wearing a thong and a cape. i saw him walking down the street and chased him down! i hope you've enjoyed these sxsw episodes. i had a blast this year.

hello everyone!  welcome to sxsw 1. this episode takes place on sunday, march, 11th 2012 at the "here. there. everywhere." party put on by dart music international and harris radio.com. i got to interview astronaut/flautist, cathrine "cady" coleman, who just spent 6 months in the international space station, pedro menendez from the argentinian band, zona tango, paul walcowski from the boxing lesson talks about their latest recording and tour... and party hosts, dave dart and pete harris talk to us about what they do.  i'd like to thank dave dart and pete harris for having me out to their party. these are shorter interviews... a different kind of show. i have part 2 coming on friday with mother falcon, black taxi and more. i can't believe i interviewed an astronaut! seriously. ciao! -jg

Episode 53: Dave Madden

Friday Mar 16, 2012

Friday Mar 16, 2012

it's the friday of sxsw and i am almost completely fried. this one has been exhausting. the walking, the drinking, the loud talking, the cacophony of 5000 bands playing at once in a one-mile radius and i played a couple of shows yesterday. anyway, i have seen some great music and i have seen some absolutely terrible music.... so it's been interesting.
my guest for episode 53 is musician/singer/songwriter, dave madden. i think i first met dave at a music conference in dewey beach, delaware like 7 years ago or something. he was living in new york at the time, but a couple of years after we met, he moved to austin. so, i was online the other day and i came across an article about dave in a magazine where he talked about feeling complacent and wanting to shake up what he does and how he presents it. by this, i mean, he was feeling like people weren't really coming to shows, they were just "shows" at a bar and not an "event" that you don't want to miss. so, what he did was put together an event and put everything he had into a concert that would make people feel like they could not miss it. well, he did it. four times. and it worked. i like dave. our conversation inspired me to look at what i'm doing and start figuring how i can do it better. thank you dave. i hope you enjoy our conversation. i did.

austin is a madhouse! sxsw is in full-swing. the music started yesterday (tuesday) so, i went walking around the affected area looking for new bands thinking that i might just "happen" upon some artist or band that would be life-changing. maybe day 2 will bring me more luck. after i post this interview, i'm going to plot out what i'm going to see and who i'm going to try to interview for the rest of the week. liars & saints plays tomorrow (thurs. 3/15)  at maria's tacos at 1:30 pm for the ruby stardust lounge event. and at 4 pm for the lucy's fried chicken event. if you're in austin for sxsw, come out as the liars & saints shows tomorrow will be my last with the band.
my guest for episode 52 is ringo deathstarr's singer/guitarist, elliot frazier. a few years ago, my cousin emily played me ringo deathstarr... i fell in love! i was happy that elliot was able to stop by last week and spend some time telling me about his experiences in beaumont, how the band started, gazing at shoes, working with frenchy, touring the u.s., europe and japan, being fucking loud, touring with smashing pumpkins earlier this year and....ringo. i was glad we go to sit down and talk. elliot is really cool and his band is amazing. enjoy!

Episode 51: Akina Adderley

Friday Mar 09, 2012

Friday Mar 09, 2012

today is the first day of sxsw. you might actually be listening to this podcast on your way to austin. i'm actually getting my shit together to leave town for a couple of days to play some shows. here at "how did i get here?" we've been setting up interviews for the week.... so look for some sxsw shows coming in the next couple of weeks.
my guest for episode 51 is the lovely and talented, akina adderley. i first heard about her when members of SKYROCKET! worked on a pink floyd tribute show. she was the girl who sang "great gig in the sky"... i heard so much about her from them that her name stuck. anyway, jessica set-up our interview and i finally got to meet the fabulous akina. we sat outside with my dogs and she told me about growing up in an extremely talented and successful musical family, her grandfather was cornetist, nat adderley, her father is pianist, nat adderley jr. and her mother is singer-actress, janet adderley. she went to the actual "fame" high school, she teaches, she writes, she records & performs with her band, akina adderley & the vintage playboys and she is a great hang. i hope you enjoy my conversation with akina. i did.

Episode 50: Matt The Electrician

Wednesday Mar 07, 2012

Wednesday Mar 07, 2012

EPISODE 50!!!!! thank you so much for listening. thanks to all of my guests! thanks to everyone who has been so supportive and have helped with the podcasts especially jessi and jessica. here's to the next 50!!!!!
my guest for episode 50 is matt the electrician. matt is an amazing singer/songwriter i've known for about a decade, i think. we sat outside and enjoyed the nice weather (sorry about the dogs barking and the birds) and he told me about his experiences growing up as the son of a carpenter, his early 90's world beat band, moving to austin, becoming an electrician, playing out in his work clothes, touring europe and japan and his danish songwriting retreats in a castle and all the while, maintaining a 22 year marriage and family. ladies and gentlemen, this is my friend, matt the electrician.

when i was around 3 years old, i started preschool at place called, esperanza. it was a preschool next to the college my mom was attending. esperanza was run by a nice lady named, virginia and her sweet, music-loving son, william. throughout my life i have run into william so, 40 years later i might still run into him when i am in houston, either when he's playing at the last concert cafe' or in the audience at a carolyn wonderland show or in a random aisle at whole foods. anyway, william's love of music reenforced my mom and my aunt's music loving ethic they instilled in me and i have never forgotten him or our walks in the morning when we sang, "good day sunshine" by the beatles. thank you william.
my guest for episode 49 is the dead left's singer and main songwriter, neal kassanoff. neal is also a preschool music teacher. he has developed a teaching program that has been celebrated and used a lot. he has also has a good career as a "grown-up" people music writer. with his new band, the dead left, neal has finally found his "rock voice" and is out making records, playing gigs and taking names. i ran into him the other night at the hotel vegas and i invited him over for a podcast. he accepted. i hope you enjoy our conversation. i did.

r.i.p. davy jones.
episode 48 features my friends, lorrie singer and bradley kopp. they're married and they write and play together and they seem to enjoy it. they came by the apartment earlier this week and we talked about their musical journeys together and apart. how they met in colorado in the 70's and reconnected in the 90's and married. they've jut released their second album, "a deep oasis" and it's available on their websites, bradleykopp.com and lorriesinger.com i really enjoyed our conversation. i hope you do too.
