have you made any new year's resolutions?
hello everyone! thank y0u so much for making 2012 such a great year for me and this podcast. i really appreciate all of you listening and giving me feedback. it means a lot to me that you take the time to listen to this show. i'd like to thank all of the guests for taking the time to sit down and talking to me. thank you so much for a great year!
my guest for episode 132 is the phenomenal singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist, brandy zdan. i've known brandy for a couple of years now. we've never had the chance to really sit down and talk until now. it was fantastic. brandy told me about her journey... growing up in winnipeg, canada, recording and touring with the juno-nominated duo, twilight hotel, making the move to austin, playing as a sideperson with bands like the trishas and making a solo album with producer george reiff due out next spring.  brandy is super cool. i hope you enjoy our conversation. i did.

Episode 131: Elias Haslanger

Monday Dec 24, 2012

Monday Dec 24, 2012

oy vey!
hello everyone! i hope you are in a quiet and safe place. i am not. i'm at my grandmother's house and there are people yelling, dogs barking and old people falling down. it's 9:13 a.m. and i'm contemplating a very strong cocktail and a xanax... merry christmas? maybe this experience will be merrier under the influence. i got so drunk last night, i rode my aunt's rascal 5 blocks to 7-11 and bought cigarettes for everyone in the family wether or not they smoke. some might call this living the dream. anyway, if i survive this experience, i'll tell you all about it on friday's show. but seriously, i hope you're having a good holiday.
my guest for episode 131 is my incredibly talented friend, elias haslanger. he is an amazing jazz saxophone player and an all around amazing human being. i feel like a better person for having talked to him. elias has been on a great artistic journey and we talk all about it. from learning his instrument, to our high school stage band and teacher, his various musical projects and his commitment to his family. after our conversation, i realized that i like him even more than i thought. i hope you enjoy our conversation. i did.

are you ready for christmas?
if it's a few days before christmas and you have more shopping to do, it kinda sucks. it starts with the xmas traffic on the streets. you can't turn left to save your life. it's hard to get the "perfect thing" for 30 different people with different tastes. granted, no one ever opens a gift and says, "what?!?!?! why did you get me this? this is the WORST present ever! fuck you! you've ruined christmas with your crappy gift, johnny!" but for some reason, that's the pressure i put myself under while shopping. i'm heading out again soon. should be fun.
my guest for episode 130 is bass player/singer/songwriter, ted russell kamp. ted was in town from l.a. a couple of weeks ago and our mutual friend, robin wiley, thought it would be a good idea if we met. well, we did and it was great! it turns out that ted and i have some friends in common and his music and his new album, "night owl",  are great. ted and i talk about his journey from sideman/bass player for shooter jennings for many years, playing bass with wilson philips and countless other artists, to finding his voice as a singer/songwriter to making and putting out albums. i'm glad ted came by, i had a great time getting to know him. i hope you like it.

Tuesday Dec 18, 2012

lesson number 1. never, ever suggest anything to rod stewart.
hello everyone! i saw some beautiful music last night from my friends, bukka & sally allen, todd wolfson and brandy zdan. my friend todd has a music series where he puts together a group of musicians and everyone just plays. last night was very special. i really love sally and brandy's songs and voices. they sang some together. i think someday i would like to hear a whole record of that. i need to get all three of them on the show. i'll do that. hey! how is your christmas shopping coming?
my guest for episode 129 is the talented guitar player/songwriter, lance keltner. i've known lance for almost 20 years. we've played with a lot of the same musicians. but like many folks i've been around, i've never really had the chance to sit down and talk to him.i'm glad he did because i found out he's really funny and a great story-teller. so a couple of weeks ago, lance came by and we fixed that. he came to the apartment and we talked about his journey starting off as a professional guitar player at 12 then moving to austin, new york, l.a. and back to austin, major labels deal, indie labels, working with andy johns, european tours, a brief (and humorous) stint with rod stewart and his youtube channel where he gets to show you how to use bad ass music gear.... needless to say, i really enjoyed our conversation. i hope you do too.

i love eydie gormet!
hello friends! i hope this podcast finds you well. how is your christmas shopping coming along? how is your chanukah? i am hoping that can finish all of my shopping this weekend... i don't know if i will. my gig tonight is literally across the street from a mall. i think after soundcheck, i'll hit the mall for some shopping and maybe i'll finish.
my guest for episode 128 is the incredibly talented and extremely cool, erin ivey. i first heard erin on a television commercial three years ago. i liked her voice and saw her interviewed on tv and was happy to see her make some waves because her talent shined in that commercial. i've never really talked to her, so i was glad to see that she was putting out a new album and so i invited her to come chat. we talk about her humble beginnings in annapolis md, her travels to austin, then portland, then back to austin, her inability to spin the right records at a party, her husband's ability to spin the right record at a party and soooo much more. i hope you enjoy our conversation. i did.

it's cold!!!!
hello everyone! i hope you are all doing well. i just got back from getting a cleaning at the dentist. my dentist is a huge music fan and had a great suggestion for the podcast... shake russell. does anyone know him? do you guys know how to find him? also, i have some bad news, i have to cancel my solo acoustic show in pflugerville this saturday due to an unexpected skyrocket show in houston. but don't worry, i'll be doing some solo shows in the new year. a lot.
my guest for episode 127 is todd sapio from the dreamy rock band, language room. language room put out their second album, skin & heart & lungs, earlier this year. i met todd a few years ago when the band was recording their first album with my friend, matt novesky. anyway, todd came by the apartment and we talked about his journey through this crazy business, living in l.a., recording their first album with matt novesky  and then their second with dwight baker, and the evolving sound of language room. i really enjoyed out conversation. i hope you do too.

Episode 126: Robin Wiley

Friday Dec 07, 2012

Friday Dec 07, 2012

did you just wink at me?
i had a blast last night! i got to be a "celebrity" judge at the national karaoke league semi-finals here in austin. there were teams. they were creative and i laughed my ass off. then, i headed over to the continental club and saw my friend and former guest, tameca jones. she really brought down the house. plus, i had a great talapia and mashed potatoes and broccoli dinner.
my guest for episode 126 is the fabulous, robin wiley. i got to hang out with robin some last year when i would see her around at shows. she just put out a new album called, "sunflower", so i invited her over to the apartment for a chat. we talked about her journey from austin to new york to los angeles and back  to austin. and throughout her story, our conversation veers into personal things like dating etc.... and we laugh a lot. i hope you enjoy our conversation. i did.

Episode 125: Jody Denberg

Tuesday Dec 04, 2012

Tuesday Dec 04, 2012

when i moved to austin in 1991, i lived in a very busy recording studio called, the congress house. it's a studio owned by producer/musician, mark hallman.  people at the studio were talking about a new radio station called, kgsr. how they played stuff that you had always wished was on the radio. so, i started listening and i loved it. in fact, i first heard nirvana, the innocence mission and lucinda williams on the station. i would always listen when i was going to and from work at whole foods. sometimes my shift started in the afternoon and sometimes it ended in the afternoon. on those afternoon drives, i would listen to the station's program director, jody denberg. he became the dj that let me know what you should be listening to. not just for me, but for a lot of people in this city that cared about music. jody is a music fan and that's what he brought to his station.
my guest for episode 125 is said music fan and radio maverick, jody denberg. i went over to jody's house yesterday and he gave a tour of his beautiful home. i got to go to his "rec room" where he has tons of photos with beatles, tom petty, yoko, patty smith and more albums than you can imagine. then we sat down in his office and he told me his story. it's a music fan's journey into a career where he just followed his heart and it really made/makes a difference. he's about to go on the air full-time again on kutx. a station that starts in the new year. i loved our visit and i'm looking forward to hanging out a lot more. i hope you enjoy our conversation. i did.
