welcome to episode 70!!!!!! i’ve been starting to put some new music together. i plan on putting it all up on my reverbnation page. i’ll let you know when it’s up. i’ve been waking up really early this week. it’s so weird. when i woke up this morning at 4:30 am, there was an ambulance and a fire truck that pulled up to my apartments. lights, sirens, freaky. i have no idea what happened. i should sleep in.

my guests for episode 70 are errol and taye from the funk band, roxy roca. i’ve known errol for quite a few years and we’ve played and recorded together and always been great pals. anyway, errol sent me an email inviting me to see roxy roca at the continental club here in austin. i had the night off, so i went and i had a great time. the band was great and really fun. there was a fantastic crowd. it was like a party! i asked errol and taye to come by the next day and be on the show and they said yes so… here it is, my conversation with errol and taye from the band, roxy roca. i hope you enjoy it. i did.

my guest today is singer/guitarist, lauren larson from the brilliant band, ume. i had never met lauren when she came over a couple of days ago, but it was such a pleasure talking to her and getting to know her a bit. her humble beginnings at playing in the diy punk scene at 14, meeting the man she would eventually marry and start ume with at 15, more punk bands, graduate school in pennsylvania, austin and the beginnings and exciting journey of ume, teaching kids to rock when not rocking herself. lauren is really cool. i really enjoyed my conversation with her. i hope you do too. ume music

my guest for episode 68 is michael kincaid from what made milwaukee famous. i’ve been a fan of theirs since i first heard them. i met michael a few years ago. he was in a video for a song i had out. wmmf has a new album coming out this summer called, you can’t fall of the floor. i was glad michael was able to stop by and talk to me about his journey from katy, tx to austin, to nashville and back to austin, the origins of wmmf and their experience from making making their own album to playing on austin city limits with franz ferdinand, touring with dr. dog, playing in a lot of bands and ready to bring what made milwaukee famous back to the people. they have some shows coming up so go to, their website to find out more about their schedule, new album status and kickstarter program for a new video. i always like running into michael and talking to him, so i was glad we could do this. as i sit down to write this paragraph about this interview, i am realizing all of the things i never talked to my guest about. he’s opened for and toured as a sideman with fiona apple, alejandro escovedo and more. writing and working with the hanson brothers and so many more… oh well, this can be my excuse to have him on again in a year.

my guest for episode 67 is my dear friend, david’ garza! david’ and i played our first show together in 1991 at fitzgerald’s in houston and have been friends ever since. david’ was a tough guy to nail down for this. he is not one that’s comfortable in these situations without making music, so i was so ecstatic that after months of asking, he finally agreed to come and talk to me on the record. david’ is my favorite musician. when he picks up an instrument, wether it’s my ukelele at a party and playing a hawaiian version of “the stroke” by billy squier or sitting at a piano in a random restaurant and playing for hours, i love to hear him make music. david’ is an extremely versatile and prolific musician. if you don’t own any of his music or have never seen him play live, i urge you to go to www.davidgarza.com immediately and buy some music and find out when he’s playing near you!  i really hope you enjoy our conversation. i did!

my guest for episode 66 is my old friend, musician, producer and now president of the texas chapter of the recording academy, eric jarvis. i first met eric when i lived in houston in the late 90’s. i was in a band called, panjandrum and he was in a band called, ink. our bands would do shows together and we all hung out a lot. anyway, eric came by a few weeks ago when he was in town working on an album and meeting with the grammy board. i was glad to catch-up with eric. he has had an interesting and rich musical journey that took a lot of turns and finally got him HERE. i hope you enjoy our conversation. i did.

my guest for episode 64 is the amazing guitarist/songwriter,  jeff plankenhorn. i met jeff in the mid-2000’s when he was playing guitar with bob schneider. i didn’t know that a chance meeting with songwriting great, ray wiley hubbard took him from nashville to austin where he started playing with many traveling singer/songwriters until he got a gig playing with gavin degraw. his guitar playing has gotten him gigs with many greats including, slaid cleeves, the courtyard hounds, bruce robison, eliza gilkyson and many more. now jeff is in the resentments along with, many other incredible songwriters, he’s on SKYPE 22 hours a day and he’s about to put out a new solo album. so, i hope you enjoy my crazy conversation with jeff. i did.

my guest for episode 63 is, kurt neumann from the bodeans. i was really looking forward to meeting kurt as i have been a bodeans fan since their first album, love & hope & sex & dreams in 1986. kurt came by the apartment last week to talk to me about the bodeans’ new album, american made which comes out on june 12th.  and while he was there we discussed his upbringing in wisconsin, the origin of the bodeans, and his journey through the ever-changing business of rock and roll. i was really glad we were able to sit down and talk. the bodeans came into my life when music was taking on a whole new meaning. music was shaping me and keeping me sane at the same time and kurt’s band was an important part of that. you can find out everything you need to about the bodeans and their new album and lengthy summer tour at www.bodeans.com i hope you enjoy our conversation. i did.

my guest for episode 62 is guitar player, lauren gurgiolo from okkervil river, the dead left and the dialtones. i had never met lauren until she came to my apartment yesterday for the interview. i had heard about her from a few of my friends and they say she’s a bad ass and so did jessica when she booked her. of course, neal kassanoff from the dead left sang her praises when he was a guest on episode 49 of this podcast. anyway, i spent time listening to her and watching some stuff on youtube and i realized everyone was right. lauren gurgiolo is a bad ass! i was glad she was able to come by the apartment and talk to me, (even though i was feeling pretty shitty and exhausted) and we talked about growing up in dallas, discovering jazz and embarking on a musical journey that would bring her to austin and get even more into jazz, country and eventually, rock. she has her own band the she fronts called, the dialtones and they are about to embark on a gigantic musical journey of their own. you can see lauren play with the dead left on thursday, april 19th at 10pm at hotel vegas in austin, tx. i really enjoyed meeting and talking to lauren. i hope you do too!

i love and have always loved dance music. although i must say, dance music and d.j. culture can be polarizing among my peers in rock. some will say, “it all sounds the same.” “it’s not even music”… but it is. they’re not making 3 minute songs working out their problems in the lyrics. it’s not about instrument virtuosity. it’s about creating a vibe. it’s about bringing a group of people together and celebrating. hopefully, you’ll be able to sit back and listen to this episode and have a greater understanding for music that just wants you to have a good time.

my guest for episode 61 is d.j. toddy b. toddy has won several austin music awards for best d.j., including this year! i was glad that toddy agreed to, and came by, the apartment. we talked about how he works a party, opening for for bigger d.j.’s like deadmau5 and skrillex, the increasing popularity of dance music and d.j. culture, his radio show and podcast and much, much more. i really enjoyed my conversation with toddy. i hope you do to.

hello everyone! i am staying with two of my dogs for the next two weeks. they are both nudging my hands while i type this. i just realized that i think they’re jealous because they think i’m petting this computer, which coincidentally, is their only rival for my attention. i wish jessi and beni would come back. i don’t talk about it much on the podcast but i miss the hell out of them. they’ll be back in august. thank god.

my guest for episode 59 is an extremely interesting and talented man, mr. bevis griffin. this is the longest conversation yet. honestly, when it was going on, it didn’t feel long because i was enjoying bevis and his story so much. he’s lead an extremely rich life from his father’s barber shop in 1960’s, pre-riot, watts in los angeles which also doubled as an illegal gambling place, the shop was on the same block as the renowned R&B nightclub “The Five-Four Ballroom” (located on the corner of 54 th St. & Broadway Blvd.) where many of greatest black entertainers, such as B.B. King, Ike Turner, and Bobby Bland often played, to 70’s punk rock, to hard rock and the black rock coalition to becoming an entrepreneur, nurturing other rock acts. he’s been around, and a part of, a lot of rock and roll history and he is a great story teller. i hope you enjoy our conversation. i did.

my guest for episode 58 is rapper/entrepreneur/producer/songwriter, tee-double. i met tee at a party at sxsw. i listened to his songs and invited him to be on the show. he told me his story about submitting his demos to warner bros. at 9 years old, recording his demos on casios and boomboxes at sears, to getting his songs placed on such highly rated shows as amc’s “breaking bad”! he is branching into getting other artists songs placed in movies, television and commercials. i hope you enjoy our conversation. i did.

my guest for episode 57 is my friend, bryan dunn. bryan sent me an email a couple of weeks before sxsw to let me know he would be in town from new york and that he’s putting out a new album “sweetheart of the music hall”… so we set up this interview during sxsw. bryan came over one morning during the conference and talked about his musical beginnings in austin through moving to new york and making great power-pop records. i hope you enjoy my conversation with bryan. i did.

my guest for episode 56 is one of my favorite musicians/funny people, billy harvey. billy moved to l.a. a few years ago and so it was nice to get together and catch-up! i found out he was in town from someone on facebook saying they were going to his show. i got in touch with him and he came by the apartment before his show. i’m glad we got to sit down and catch-up. we talked about being socially awkward, moving around a lot, his first bands, the l.a. hard rock scene, playing guitar and producing several acts including, bob schneider, charlie mars and many more, making a documentary film with the camera on his laptop, working hard as an actor and making two full-length films. you can find billy on facebook and you can see his very entertaining website www.billyharveymusic.com. i’m glad billy got to stop by. i really enjoyed our conversation. i hope you do too.

so, for this podcast, i got to interview a couple of members of the  20-plus person band, mother falcon. i talked to ezra from black taxi and samantha rex from the attic ends (both from brooklyn) together because it seemed like these brooklyn kids really look out for and support each other and i really liked that. i also got to interview my old friend and former bandmate, brad byram from blondes make better victims. the best interview on here is with a man named, g.o.a.t. who was wearing a thong and a cape. i saw him walking down the street and chased him down! i hope you’ve enjoyed these sxsw episodes. i had a blast this year.

my guest for episode 53 is musician/singer/songwriter, dave madden. i think i first met dave at a music conference in dewey beach, delaware like 7 years ago or something. he was living in new york at the time, but a couple of years after we met, he moved to austin. so, i was online the other day and i came across an article about dave in a magazine where he talked about feeling complacent and wanting to shake up what he does and how he presents it. by this, i mean, he was feeling like people weren’t really coming to shows, they were just “shows” at a bar and not an “event” that you don’t want to miss. so, what he did was put together an event and put everything he had into a concert that would make people feel like they could not miss it. well, he did it. four times. and it worked. i like dave. our conversation inspired me to look at what i’m doing and start figuring how i can do it better. thank you dave. i hope you enjoy our conversation. i did.

my guest for episode 52 is ringo deathstarr’s singer/guitarist, elliot frazier. a few years ago, my cousin emily played me ringo deathstarr… i fell in love! i was happy that elliot was able to stop by last week and spend some time telling me about his experiences in beaumont, how the band started, gazing at shoes, working with frenchy, touring the u.s., europe and japan, being fucking loud, touring with smashing pumpkins earlier this year and….ringo. i was glad we go to sit down and talk. elliot is really cool and his band is amazing. enjoy!

my guest for episode 51 is the lovely and talented, akina adderley. i first heard about her when members of SKYROCKET! worked on a pink floyd tribute show. she was the girl who sang “great gig in the sky”… i heard so much about her from them that her name stuck. anyway, jessica set-up our interview and i finally got to meet the fabulous akina. we sat outside with my dogs and she told me about growing up in an extremely talented and successful musical family, her grandfather was cornetist, nat adderley, her father is pianist, nat adderley jr. and her mother is singer-actress, janet adderley. she went to the actual “fame” high school, she teaches, she writes, she records & performs with her band, akina adderley & the vintage playboys and she is a great hang. i hope you enjoy my conversation with akina. i did.
