it's the end of september and it's still 105 degrees in austin. too hot! on sunday, my girlfriend jessi and i went to  a street festival here called, "the pecan street festival". went to look at stuff, walk around then watch singing sensation, nakia at 6pm. well, we went around 3 and it was just too hot to stay.  by the time we walked around the thing once, we were drenched in sweat, tired of trying to follow the shade and just plain wiped out. nakia was going to be on the show this week, but sadly, we both were unable to sit down yesterday due to complications... it worked out because at the time nakia and i were supposed to be talking, there were four guys using those blowers all around my apt. so, look for the nakia episode in october.
episode 13 features our first non-musician guest. dale dudley is host of the long-lasting, incredibly popular "dudley and bob" morning show on KLBJ fm  in austin. the show has been on for more than 20 years. he also has a podcast called, "the taint and teabag show" i have been a guest on both shows.. i've known dale since the early 90's. i've always liked him we've always had good conversations. this one is no exception. i'd like to thank dale for coming by after he was on the radio for 4 hours. so, here's my friend, dale dudley.

good morning world! before my gig at the hole in the wall (across the street from the u.t. campus) last night, i walked over to the cactus cafe' (on the u.t. campus) and got to see some of miles zuniga's record release. he sounded great. i urge everyone to buy his album, "these ghosts have bones" as soon as you can. our show at the hole in the wall was a hard one for me. we've been playing venues with good monitors and space onstage... that place caught me off guard. maybe we should've just turned up really loud, played really fast and screamed. it used to work for my old band, goudie.
episode 12 features miles zuniga from fastball. miles has a new album coming out tuesday, sept. 27th. it's called, "these ghosts have bones". miles came by the apartment this week and we talked. he told us about growing up in laredo, moving to austin, learning to be a musician in a fertile music scene and getting record deals, being in fastball, dealing with the massive success of selling over a million albums and what that does, to putting out his own albums and making music on his own terms and making the best record of his career. i hope you enjoy my conversation with miles. i did.
also, don't forget.... our live podcast with the coveters is coming up. monday, october 3rd 8 pm at momo's in austin, texas. admission is free and we want you to come and see how we do this. have a great day! ciao! -jg

Friday Sep 16, 2011

hello everyone! when you get this, it will be friday. today is the first day of the ACL festival. are you going? i'm playing gigs all weekend, so i won't be able to attend. none of my bands are playing. anyway, there are a lot of bands in town this week. i wish i had my shit more together for this podcast, because i would've booked some touring acts, which is something i'd love to do. i love having my friends from austin on the show, but i would really like to have all kinds of musicians from all over the world on the show as well. maybe i need a "booker"....
episode 10 features my old friend, ian moore. we spent the afternoon together and i had gotten to see him play earlier that week for a benefit for the fire victims. we talked about his early years, a life-changing event that took him from violin to guitar, the black cat, his early success, his uncompromising commitment to his art and the places it's taken him, his tour with jason mraz and his newest project, ian moore and the lossy coils. i hope you enjoy our conversation. it currently holds the record for the longest episode yet!
don't forget! monday, october 3rd at momo's we have our first "how did i get here?" live podcast at 8 pm. my guests will be, THE COVETERS! find out more at www.momosclub.com

Episode 8: Charlie Faye

Friday Sep 09, 2011

Friday Sep 09, 2011

hello there! well, i think the fires in central texas are subsiding. sadly, now that the smoke is clearing, we are seeing devastation in central texas that is absolutely horrifying. i have been getting facebook messages about fellow musicians who live in the affected areas and it makes me so sad. here's a link so that you can help victims of this awful tragedy... http://www.statesman.com/blogs/content/shared-gen/blogs/austin/blotter/entries/2011/09/06/help_for_fire_victims.html
episode 8 features charlie faye. charlie just released an album that she made while she toured the united states. however, her tour was different than most... she would live in a city for a month, get a residency, put together a band, get to know the people and the place she was staying, let them get to know her, she would record a song and then when the month was over, she would go to the next city. she did this for 10 months. you can read about her experience at www.charliefaye.com. i hope you enjoy my conversation with charlie. ciao! -jg

Episode 7: Kat Edmonson

Wednesday Sep 07, 2011

Wednesday Sep 07, 2011

hello friends! i have to apologize for not posting any new episodes last week. sorry. i had to postpone the david' garza (don't worry ladies, we're having a make-up session next week!) episode and joseph king and i couldn't meet up. it was going to be "mexican week". i was really excited to have a theme. sadly, i have to do them another time. i went out and saw the lossy coils last night which features my friends, ian moore and matt harris. it was AMAZING! i was in an earlier incarnation of this band and i stepped out to make my album, "el payaso". i needed to make that album, but i have always regretted leaving the lossy coils. i have had a lot of bands and i spent many years on the road with someone that i fit perfectly with socially. his name is einar pedersen. outside of einar, i have only been in two bands that the whole band, personality wise, worked perfectly. this is one of them. anyway, it was great to see ian and matt. i love the music they're making together. they will be here over the next couple of days and they're coming to do the podcast!
episode 7 features kat edmonson. kat is extremely talented, she is very smart and she has worked really hard and seized the opportunities presented to her and in her short career, she has managed to release a socially conscious song that had hundreds of thousands downloads, put out an album that had a song licensed a few times for tv shows and was hand-picked by lyle lovett to open his summer tour in 2010 and she joined him on the jay leno show for a duet. i had a great time talking to her and i'm glad to have made a new friend. i hope you enjoy our conversation. ciao! -jg
