it's cold outside! it's cold outside! it's cold outside! well, not cold, but chilly. i'll take it!
do you ever go to a party with the intention of staying a finite amount of time, but somehow, usually through the use of alcohol and just having a good time, the time limit you've set for yourself is stretched? well, last night, my girlfriend, jessi came-up with a solution... she set an alarm. yes.  she set a party alarm. we gave ourselves 1 and 1/2 hours to "party" and then we left when the alarm went off. i was able to wake up super early, do laundry, finish putting episode 21 together, post episode 20 and get ready to interview kelly willis for episode 22. all before i leave town at 2 to play some gigs this weekend. party alarm; try it!
my guest for episode 20 is taylor muse from the band, quiet company. i have just started listening to them and I LOVE THEM!!!!!! their new album, "we are all where we belong" is a powerful personal statement set to gorgeous music and simply, a joy to listen to. i met with lead singer, taylor muse for lunch at a place called, weirdo's, for fifty cent wings and had a good conversation about how taylor and his band, quiet company got here. we did the interview outside and it was pretty noisy, so this podcast has a bit of a different sound. they will from time to time because i'll be in different locations for some of these interviews. anyway, when i listened to it, i noticed it at first, but then after a few minutes, it didn't phase me. what do you think? here's my conversation with taylor muse from quiet company.

my friend, bruce machart's second book, "men in the making",  came out yesterday! it's a collection of short stories and he's currently on tour promoting it by doing readings at bookstores. he's coming over tonight and we're going to do a podcast, so you'll get to hear from him soon! this is our first remote episode using the new field recorder. there were birds everywhere so the interview has this tropical feel...
episode 19 features my friend, johnny vogelsang. i don't really know when i met johnny. i remember being around him when we both lived in houston in '89 and '90. after i moved to austin and started mr. rocket baby, our bands did a lot of shows together. even a residency for around a year at the famous, steamboat on 6th street. johnny's a working bass player/teacher/student. in this episode, johnny v. tells us how he got here and i hope you enjoy it.

hey everyone!  i have been in tech-hell for the last two days. first of all, when i was working on this episode yesterday, something went crazy with my garageband program, then something went crazy with my hard disk recorder, but then it fixed itself. i got to my hotel last night after my gig and the internet connection was so slow, i just went to sleep and started putting it together again this morning.... anyway, now it's 3:21 p.m. and i have to go load in soon. this hotel has terrible hi-speed internet. i can't believe i'm paying $18 dollars for this shit!
my guest for episode 18 is kathy valentine from the go go's and the bluebonnets. kathy and i met around 6 or 7 years ago. i first met her when i opened for her. we became friends and stayed in touch. when she moved to austin, i played with her and then last year, i started an all-girl band with me as the singer and kathy was the guitar player. i have always been a fan of the go go's. i feel like i come from their family tree in music. my girlfriend and i got to see them on their last tour. they were amazing! so, i was glad that kathy was able to come over and open up about her carreer and who she is and how she got here... i hope you enjoy my conversation with my friend., kathy valentine.

hello my friends! it's been a crazy week. i had a birthday. i played in houston on friday and saturday with SKYROCKET! i got to spend the day saturday with my family and seeing my new baby cousins, elena and carlos. that was all good. there was a "48 hours" show about my mom's trial. that was weird, but i got a lot of nice comments from people. thank you. the show had music from my band, liars & saints.  people had some nice comments about that as well and thank you.
episode 17 features my friend, jon dee graham i've known jon since the 90's and i have always enjoyed sitting down and talking to him. he's always seemed like a guy trying to keep stay grounded and living each day as it comes... sounds cool, but it's harder than you think. jon came by the apartment to share his story and i feel like i learned a lot about him. he can be found on wednesday and sunday nights at the continental club in austin, texas. i hope you enjoy our conversation. ciao! -jg

thanks to VH1 classics' "that metal show", i have gotten an education over the last couple of years. i knew and liked a lot of the hard rock and metal that was popular when i was in jr. high like, judas priest, ozzy's first two solo albums, some iron maiden, van halen etc... but i never heard bands like saxon, accept, king diamond or anything like that until i was an adult. so, i'm learning. i love what i'm learning. oh! i watched scorsese's documentary about george harrison... brilliant! watch it!
episode 16 features jason mcmaster from, watchtower, dangerous toys, gahdzilla motor company, broken teeth, ignitor, evil united and many, many more.  jason is a metal legend. he's been inducted to the texas music hall of fame and influenced many bands that went on to influence many other bands. he is an extremely creative and driven artist who has stayed true to who he is and that is always commendable. i've had the pleasure of knowing jason for quite a few years. i've always enjoyed talking to him and watching him perform. i was excited to get to sit down and talk to him about growing up in and leaving corpus christi, joining watchtower and dangerous toys and his many other bands, what it means to be a metal fan, his love for making music and how he got here. i hope you enjoy it too ciao! -jg

i'm very sorry for the delay. i had all day on friday to do this, but the internet was down in my hotel while they made an "upgrade"... it came back on 20 minutes before i had to be at my gig. anyway, i had a good weekend. i played a lot this week and then i officiated cory glaeser's (author of our theme song) wedding on sunday and last night i played at an elvis costello tribute night.
episode 15 features the coveters live in front of an audience, suzanna choffel, warren hood, michael kincaid, brad houser, wayne sutton and jeff botta! we had a blast doing it and i learned a lot about the band. i'm really looking forward to the next live one! enjoy the coveters. here are some pictures from our live podcast! http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150309753652352.342684.685497351&type=3 ciao, jg
