zero dark boner
hello friends! so, after 3 failed attempts to see zero dark 30 (just last night), i finally saw it today. it's great, just like people say. my weekend was extremely low-key. i wasn't feeling too good. i thought i was getting the flu. thank god, i wasn't. i want to remind those of you who live in houston that i am playing a solo acoustic show THIS saturday, february 2, 2013 at anderson fair. i'll be playing after recent guest, aimee bobruk. if you don't know my music, come out and see the show. i love to entertain. click on this link for info. http://www.facebook.com/events/353530641421544/?fref=ts see you there!
our guest for episode 141 is animator/graphic novelist, yehudi mercado! yehudi's 2nd graphic novel, "pantalones, tx", comes out in february. i've read it, it's fantastic. it's funny. he's funny. i just read his amazing first graphic novel, "buffalo speedway" about one phenomenal night in a pizza delivery boy's life. definitely worth the read. our mutual friend, nettie reynolds, hooked us up and i went over to yehudi's house a few weeks ago and he told me his story. so, i hope you enjoy our conversation. i did.

Friday Jan 25, 2013

"i partied with godley and creme!"
hello lovelies! i hope you are all doing well. i am. i played with SKYROCKET! last night at the house of blues in houston for a corporate thing. it was a great time. i love playing there. now, i have the weekend off from playing and i have no idea what to do with myself... i just finished an incredible audiobook called, "i want my mtv" about the first 10 years of mtv as told by over 400 people who were around for it. from artists to mtv & music executives, managers, video directors.  it's really incredible and i highly recommend it. read it or listen to it!
my guest for episode 140 is singer/songwriter and now the star of his very own documentary, kevin gant. i first heard kevin over 20 years ago when i moved to austin. i saw him on access tv. i was blown away. i became a fan and later we became friends and played shows together. i have always thought the world about kevin. his demeanor is almost angelic. then,  in the mid 90's, kevin disappeared. then a couple of weeks ago, i saw this documentary by the duplass brothers called, "kevin" and it's about kevin gant. the story was incredible so i asked him to come in and talk to me about what his life has been like. he's been on an incredible journey and i was so glad that he was able to come and talk about leaving the air force to become a musician and his crazy life afterwards. it's very heartwarming, i get emotional and kevin talks to me about his epic life. i hope you enjoy our conversation. i did.

Tuesday Jan 22, 2013

"can i make a request? could y'all play uncle cracker?"
hello friends! the first month of 2013 is winding down and our daily statistics are telling us that this is our best month yet. exiting, right? well,  first of all, thank you for listening. second, we're spending the next couple of months working on some changes to better serve you. so, look out!
last night, i went to the saxon pub to see bob schneider. one of my best friends, kyle crusham was playing guitar and contributing banter. the show was great. i wish i could've seen more. i got the after it had already started and it gets so crowded that if you don't get your spot, you cam lose some of the subtleties. anyway, i made my way to the middle of the crowd and was able to see more. maybe next time, i'll plan a little better. either way, it was a really great show and it's so good to know that each show is so unique and that you can go and be a part of it on any monday. i'm glad i'm starting to get out again.
our guest for episode 139 is singer/songwriter, aimee bobruk. aimee has a new album, /ba.’brook/ that comes out next tuesday (1/29/13). she's got some release shows staring this weekend. so i was glad that she was able to stop by a couple of weeks ago and talk to me about her journey as an artist. from her start in huntsville, tx to making her best album to date, "/ba.’brook/ .  i really enjoyed my conversation with aimee. i hope you do too.

our guest for episode 138 is pedal steel/guitar player, ricky ray jackson. i've known ricky for about 7 years and i've always liked him a lot. he always makes me laugh and he is extremely talented. you might know ricky from playing with, hayes carll, craig finn (the hold steady), bruce robison and most recently, alejandro escovedo. i was glad i was able to sit down and talk to ricky. it's a great conversation. i hope you enjoy it. i did.

tempurpedic bed covers are fucking rad!
hello my friends! i hope you're in good shape today. i am. i got a wonderful present from the u.p.s. yesterday... a tempurpedic mattress cover pad thing... what are they called?!?! anyway, my ex-stepmom, coni had one on the bed i slept on while i was visiting in miami and i guess i was open about my love for it. so she got me one. let me tell you, they're great! if a whole tempurpedic mattress is out of your price-range, this is just as good. thank you coni! i sleep like a king!
my guest for episode 136 is the amazingly talented and incredibly cool, jazz mills. i've known and been around jazz for the last couple of years, but never really got the chance to sit down and talk. well, we took care of that. jazz came by yesterday and we talked about everything from her humble beginnings in san angelo, tx, her folk-singing mother and artistic father, wanting to be a super hero, moving to austin, playing music, from back-up singer in a funk band to co-founding the band, cowboy & indian and her other musical endeavors, motherhood and her solo album. all the while maintaining a level-head. i found out that i love jazz mills. after this conversation, you will too.

Wednesday Jan 09, 2013

new year, new stuff.
hello everyone! i'm back from my trip to miami. i had some time to think about my trip and i came to a decision... listen to the show, i explain where i'm at with things like family and where i fit in this family. meanwhile, i'm getting back into the swing of things here. went to practice with SKYROCKET!, we have some new jams in the works. i've been booking some cool interviews for the show and i've been booking some solo shows. 2013 will be a year of great work! are you ready?
my guest for episode 135 is the lovely and talented, scarlett olson. i  ran into scarlett a month ago when i was out seeing tameca jones. we talked about some music stuff and i looked up her last album when i got home. well, i loved it! her last album has such a fresh, electronica/latin feel to it while having very personal/confessional lyrics. so, a couple of weeks ago scarlett came by and we talked about growing up in san antonio, going to college in mexico, leaving college to play, record and tour with a "rock en espanol" band, then eventually moving to austin, playing in different bands until finding her own voice and making an album and much, much more. i hope you enjoy our conversation. i did.

my guest for episode 134 is texas music hall of fame member, paul minor. if you live in austin and play music or go see music, chances are you know paul. he's been a fixture in the music scene since the early 80's. i met paul at some point in 1989 in houston and we've been pals ever since. paul came by the apartment a couple of weeks ago and we talked about everything... living in a religious commune as a kid, moving to austin where he started playing in bands as a kid, touring and recording with beaver nelson, his superego, the rock-and-roll-free-for-all, his solo albums, marfa,  his sound company that provides sound and p.a.'s for a lot of clubs in town and of course, the texas tycoons. paul is a great musician/guy with an interesting story. i hope you enjoy our conversation. i did.
