in 2013, let's bring back the house party.
hello folks! how are you? i am doing well on this windy and gorgeous day in austin, texas. i had a good weekend. i played at the house of blues in houston with SKYROCKET! on saturday. it was a great time. it was our first show after our two-week break and it was nice to be back to work. we'll be back in houston this friday, march 1st at rockefeller hall. if you're in houston, come on out. while i'm talking about upcoming shows, my former band, liars & saints in reuniting for a show! we'll be playing wednesday, march 6th at antone's here in austin. if you're in austin, come out. i don't know when we'll be playing again. i'm looking forward to it. i miss those guys.
my guest for episode 149 is actor/singer/masseuse to the stars, emmy robbin. you guys might know emmy from her work in "grindouse: planet terror", "machete", "sin city" or her latest film, "i didn't come here to die", which is available at the red box and on itunes. i've known emmy since her days at ME TV, (austin's 24 music television channel) and we've always been pals. i saw "i didn't come here to die"  a few weeks ago and i asked her to come by for a sit down. so she did and we talked about, growing up in the country, ME TV, her roles in robert rodriguez films, hanging out with quinten tarantino, toplessness in horror films, dating, the southern sirens, her band, dead love club with the vallejo brothers and much, much more. emmy is a great hang and fun person to talk to. i hope you enjoy our conversation. i did.

any oscar predictions? tweet 'em at me. @johnnygoudie
hello my friends! what's happening? i got to see a great show last night black taxi played at the parish. they only have one more week on their residency so if you're in austin, i suggest you go see them next week... before you're sad you didn't. and if you haven't yet, check out episode 147 with black taxi. i'm going to play the house of blues in houston with skyrocket! this weekend. our vacation is over. i'm ready to get back to work. what are you doing for the oscars? i'm going to my neighbor's place. i just got a text saying it's going to be a taco bar scene for food. follow me on twitter that night. i'll be venting.
my guest for episode 148 is country singer/songwriter, amanda cevallos. i have heard about amanda for a while. a few weeks ago i went and checked out her band at the broken spoke here in austin. it was great! people were two-stepping (which i need to learn), the band was great and so was she. anyway, she came over the next day and we chatted about her journey which as it turns out, is a little less country and a little more rock and roll. it was a surprise to me, but i'll spare you the spoiler. i had a great time getting to know amanda and i recorded it just for you. i hope you enjoy it.

Monday Feb 18, 2013

Monday Feb 18, 2013

city mouse becomes country mouse.
hello friends! i hope you're doing well. i am. i had a good weekend off. laid low friday and saturday then spent all day sunday having a great time. brunch, cocktails, house party. i have a song due for the songwriting game... i need to start and finish it. definitely tomorrow. i'm getting ready for the liars & saints show coming up at antone's next month. i get a lot of email about that band due to our appearance on the television show, "48 hours". we haven't played since sxsw 2012. i have no idea if we'll play afterwards. i guess we'll all have to stay-tuned and see what happens. either way, i'm excited to get in a room with those guys (and girl) and rock that shit!
do you like our new logo? it was made by the amazingly talented, allyson lipkin. you should hire to make your stuff too. here's her website lipstingmedia.com/
my guests for episode 147 is new york band, black taxi. the four members of black taxi have relocated to austin for two months to write and record new songs and play shows regionally including a residency at austin club, the parish for the month of february. my friend jake and i drove out to their home/studio in the country. they played me some great new songs then we sat down talked about the austin stay, writing songs, what keeps them together, touring, recording, how they feel about all of that and much, much more. also, after the interview i did, we have a special flashback interview from sxsw 2012 with ezra from black taxi and samantha rex from the attic ends. i had a great time hanging out with the guys at their new compound. check out the photos jake took at our facebook page. they're talented musicians and songwriters, thoughtful, smart and very nice. i hope you enjoy our conversation. i did.

Episode 146: Dustin Welch

Friday Feb 15, 2013

Friday Feb 15, 2013

hello my friends! i hope you are all well and that you survived a week that had fat tuesday, ash wednesday and valentine's day. did you give up something for lent? i was going to give something up but i didn't know where to start. so like a deer in the headlights, i just stood there staring blankly into space drinking, smoking, eating badly and masturbating without any kind of regulation. i'm telling you, it's a mess over here. i hope this week didn't blow your mind.
my guest for episode 146 is my good friend and brilliant singer/songwriter, dustin welch. dustin has a new album that just came out this past tuesday (2/12/13) called, "tijuana bible". it's dustin's second album and it's getting amazing reviews. i highly recommend it. i was glad dustin could stop by this week and chat with me about montessori school, his musical family (dad, kevin welch and sister savanna welch of the trishas), sweat lodges, being a songwriter in nashville, joseph campbell, moving to austin and everything that makes him tick. dustin is a smart, thoughtful and heartfelt guy. i love hanging out with him. after you listen, you'll see why.

Tuesday Feb 12, 2013

Tuesday Feb 12, 2013

hello friends and masterful pole-dancers! happy fat tuesday! i hope you're all doing well and getting ready for valentine's day. i have no valentine.  so, i'm dealing with that. maybe i should do something anti-valentine's, like hang out with a bunch of angry dudes and watch a sport at a tittie bar... or maybe i should pretend to be in love with someone i don't know very well for 24 hours and disappoint them repeatedly for that time period... as you can see, i have a lot of options, so this is going to be a good week for me.
my guest for episode 145 is incredible songwriter, bill carter. bill and his ever-evolving band, the blame, have been a part of the austin music scene for over 30 years. along with life/songwriting partner, ruth ellsworth, he's had songs covered by over 200 artists including stevie ray vaughan, the fabulous thunderbirds, robert palmer, the counting crowes, storyville, omar and the howlers, the brian setzer orchestra, waylon jennings and many, many more. bill came over and we talked about his crazy journey, a disciplined work ethic, the west memphis three, his life in rock and roll and much much more. his new album "unknown" is out and it's incredible. i hope you enjoy our conversation. i sure did.

hello friends and foes alike! i hope you are all doing well. i'm good. i ended my self-imposed exile this week by going out for three nights in a row! i saw two music shows and last night, i saw comedian jb smoove from "curb your enthusiasm". he was amazingly funny. he did a two-hour set. i'm sore from laughing so much. also, i saw brooklyn's black taxi on the first night of their month-long austin residency. great show! if you live in austin, go to the parish one of these wednesdays and see them for yourself. you won't be disappointed. also, if you live in austin, i'll be playing a show tomorrow (saturday, febraury 9th 2013) at strange brew. i'll be opening for tony scalzo from fastball. come out. say hi.
my guest for episode 144 is the incredibly cool, chris dye from the band, dye4. for starters, i thought chris was a different chris dye. i know. weird. turns out, he has amazing songs and a truly fascinating story. we have a lot of the same influences and he is a super-nice guy. we talk about growing up in california, the punk scene, hollywood, crashing and burning on drugs and moving to austin and making an incredible album and building log cabins. seriously! join me as i get to know chris dye.
