hello my friends! i hope you are all on a winning streak. of course not the "charlie sheen" kind, just one where your own life is going well. mine is going pretty well. i'm getting ready to go see james mccartney with trish and darin from SKYROCKET! and i'm meeting a person i've never met there. it's not a blind date, just someone in town for a while that doesn't know anyone. it's a long story. i'll talk about it on friday's show. otherwise, i had a good weekend. SKYROCKET! played friday and saturday. both good shows. in the podcast, i talk about a lady who lifted her dress up to impress the band. we were not impressed. sunday, i was invited by former guest and super-cool chick, paula nelson to see her play at willie's 80th birthday. she had a great show and i had a good time... you'll hear all about it on the show today.
hey! quick reminder... i'm playing a solo show next monday, may 6th at the saxon pub in austin, tx at 7pm opening for bob schneider. the next monday, may 13th, i'll be doing a live podcast at the saxon pub at 7pm before bob schneider's show. my guests will be the edison chair and austin treasure, david cotton. i'd love to see you all there!
my guest for episode 167 is drummer/composer, brian lee sebastian. i've known brian for almost 30 years. he's an amazing drummer/composer/producer. we get into a long talk about his life, his travels, the bands he's played in, the choices he's made in his life and career and best of all, beating cancer. he's a beautiful person with a wonderful soul. i hope you enjoy our conversation. i did.

hello my friends!!!! i hope you are all doing/feeling/being well. i am. i've had a great week. the moontower comedy festival has been in town and i've gone the last two nights. i've seen a lot of comedy, made some friends and hung out with other friends. they have an after show party that's also a lot of fun. i saw so much comedy. it was  a lot of fun, but i am looking forward to getting back to playing some shows. speaking of which, i have a solo acoustic show on monday, may 6th at 7pm at the saxon pub in austin, tx. if you're here, come by. i'll be opening for bob schneider.
my guests for episode 166, is the prohibition-era jazz band,  jitterbug vipers. i don't always have whole bands on the show, but to get the idea of this wonderfully talented group of kooks, you need them to be together. luckily, we were able to pull it off. it was early, i was hungover, but we got to business... masumi and sarah sharp meeting at the berklee college of music, slim and francie's 15 marriages to each other, slim's hit and run. their new album featuring mostly songs written by sarah, their show on may 4th at the one world theater and much, much more. we laugh a lot on this one. these are some crazy, talented folks and i really enjoyed my conversation with them. i hope you do too.

live podcast monday, may 13th 7pm at the saxon pub in austin, tx with guests, edison chair & david cotton!!!
hello friends!!!! summer is coming. pools are starting to sparkle with that inviting sparkle they have. i'm looking forward to it. i picked up my badge for the moontower comedy festival today. i'm only going to be able to go for two of the four days, but i'm going to get see everyone i want to see. i'm looking forward to that. if you're in austin this friday, april 26th, SKYROCKET! will be playing at cedar street courtyard. we play at 9:30. oh! while i'm promoting shows, i'm playing a solo acoustic show at the saxon pub in austin, tx on monday, may 6th at 7 pm opening for bob schneider. okay... enough promo.
my guest for episode 165 is singer/songwriter corey baum. corey moved to austin a few years ago from bowling green, ohio. i met him when he was bar tending at momo's and i had a residency there. we always got along well. then i heard his music and i was blown away. he has such a great depth and sense of humor in his songs. anyway, one of his bands, dumb, just released a cassette (yes. i said cassette), he plays a show every tuesday at the clive bar, he's about to head out on tour with leo rondeau this summer and he's getting buff from landscaping. i hope you enjoy our conversation. i did.

Episode 164: Robyn Ludwick

Friday Apr 19, 2013

Friday Apr 19, 2013

our thoughts and prayers this week are with our friends in boston, ma and west, tx.
hello friends! i hope you are all doing well. it's been a pretty intense week. tomorrow is 4/20.. they're having a reggae festival tomorrow here in austin. that seems pretty apropos for austin. there's actually a slogan, "keep austin weird". hey man. i get it. but if you have to focus on that, how weird are you gonna be? what kind of worthwhile weirdness is forced and premeditated? "hey everyone! before you leave the house, don't forget to be weird. check your clothes. how weird do you look?" maybe they should make the cops wear tie-dyed uniforms. make the city council wear those weird wigs. half of the town already has zz-top beards or wax mustaches. isn't that weird enough? also, i think i'm naturally pretty weird. i'd actually like to be more normal.
my guest for episode 164 is singer/songwriter extraordinaire, robyn ludwick! robyn has been a critically acclaimed artist since since the release of her first album just under a decade ago. her last album, "out of these blues" was in the top 10 of most texas top tens... produced by gurf morlix (our guest on episode 123 ) and featuring a slew of great guests including my SKYROCKET! bandmate, trish murphy. anyway, she just went back into the studio with gurf and she took some time to stop by the apartment and have a chat. we talked about her triumphant journey. from her humble beginnings as a poor kid in bandera, tx, growing up the little sister of texas music legends, charlie and bruce robison, marrying young, working in bars, going to college, becoming an engineer, becoming and being a mom and finally, stepping out of the shadow of her family as a late-blooming, yet fully-formed songwriter. i had a great time getting to know robyn. i'm sure you will too. she has a great story.

Tuesday Apr 16, 2013

"one question... can i perform shakespeare there?"
hello my lovelies! i hope this episode finds you happy and healthy. i think i'm happy and healthy. i am running out the door to tape an episode of the hodgecast. the hodgecast is a podcast hosted by my friend, charlie hodge. he and his co-host, matt sadler have been guests on this show and i have been on their show many, many times. i'm looking forward to it. i bet it will be up tomorrow. i'm thinking about making t-shirts... would you want a t-shirt? tweet at me. let me know. maybe i should put someone in charge of it. shit! i need an intern. i'm terrible at getting these kinds of things done. then when i get them done, i'm terrible at keeping up with them. let's see what happens.
my guest for episode 163 is stand-up comic and part of the whiskey brothers podcast, rob mungle. i've known rob for a few years. he comes out to the SKYROCKET! shows in houston. we usually talk and hang for a bit. he's a great guy. he's a very funny guy. the whiskey brothers podcast was just at #38 on the itunes comedy podcast chart. that's quite an accomplishment. he came by my hotel when i was in houston a few weeks ago and we sat down and talked about the comedy scene, podcasts and much, much more. i hope you enjoy our conversation. i did.

Friday Apr 12, 2013

Friday Apr 12, 2013

hello friends! how are you guys? i just woke up... it's obscenely early. i was too tired when i go home last night to do this. i got a few hours of sleep, i'm jacked up on coffee and i'm ready to write. i played with SKYROCKET! last night and we're playing the next two nights. i can't tell you how nice it is to work with people you love and enjoy being around. it's a good thing and i consider myself very lucky. i make fun of it a lot because it's also very silly, but it's a good time and i love my friends.

my guest for episode 162 is extremely funny comic/writer, lucas molandes. lucas won austin's funniest person in 2010, he has appeared on comedy central's "live at gotham", austin's moontower comedy festival (i saw him open for marc maron @ last years festival) , montreal's "just for laughs" festival, written for mtv and much, much more. i've gotten to hang out with lucas and see him perform a few times over the last couple of months and i really like him and i think what he's really, really funny. if you're in austin this weekend, he'll be doing two shows on saturday, april 13th at the velveeta room. he'll also be at the moontower comedy festival (just got my badge yesterday!!!). you can also find him doing stand up somewhere in austin almost every night of the week. find out more about lucas at lucascomedy.com . i hope you enjoy our conversation. i did.

Tuesday Apr 09, 2013

hello my friends! i hope you're all feeling fantastic and loving the spring. i sure am. i had a great weekend of shows and good times with good friends. while we were in houston i had the chance to do a podcast with my friend, fellow podcaster and stand-up comic, rob mungle. look for that next week.   so, an all around fabulous weekend. hey! if you're interested and you live in austin or houston, SKYROCKET! will be playing some shows this week. you can find out where and when by going to skyrockettheband.com and checking the dates page.
my guest for episode 161 is my outspoken old friend and former club owner, danny crooks. danny was the was the owner of steamboat and the patriarch of a scene that was born out of his club. these bands included, breedlove, vallejo, bob schneider's various bands, sister 7, will sexton, billy white and many, many more. danny is retired from the club scene and taken his kingdom to a small town on the outskirts of austin. i went out to danny's place to sit down and chat about his life and document a specific scene that took place in austin in the 90's... and i was a part of it. my band, mr. rocket baby started our thursday night residency in may of 1993. so, we talk about his wild journey through the bar business and his life. i have a great affection for danny and i miss sitting around shooting the shit with him, so it was nice to hang out again. i hope you enjoy this conversation. i did.

hello my friends! happy birthday to cory glaeser! he is the guy who wrote our theme song, "needle hits the groove". i just love that dude.  i hope you're all doing well and you're enjoying the month of april. i am. my allergies are a bit rough right now, but i'm making it. i'm getting ready to head out to head out to houston for a couple of days for a couple of shows with skyrocket. we'll be at the houston pavilion on thursday april 4th at 7 pm and at the continental club on friday april 5th at 10 pm. what's up?!?!?

Episode 159: Will Knaak

Tuesday Apr 02, 2013

Tuesday Apr 02, 2013

hello my friends! how are you today? i can't believe it's already april. can you? time is flying by... am i doing enough with my life? what's going on here? am i nuts? i am looking forward to pool weather and pool parties and bringing that back. do you have a pool? do you live a reasonable distance from my house? i've already started my "pool party 2013" ipod playlist... i'm about 20 songs in. any suggestions for my mix? tweet them at me. i'm @johnnygoudie on twitter.
hey! if you live in houston, come out to the continental club this friday, april 5th. i'll be playing with SKYROCKET! seriously, come out. it's a scene.
my guest for episode 159 is accomplished guitar player and singer/songwriter, will knaak. will started out playing guitar early and found himself onstage with legends and getting accepted by them at the age of 11. i met will a few years ago through playing with liars & saints and i've always found him to be a sweet and funny guy. i got the chance to play with him a few weeks ago during those liars & saints reunion shows. he played lap steel and i'm pretty sure he'll playing with us every time we play. will's been in the sideman/guitar player position for some pretty high-profile bands for over a decade and he's only 28 years old. he's about to start recording a solo album, so i asked him to stop by and chat. well he did and it turns out, he has had an extremely interesting life. music has actually saved his life and he plays like it has. i really like will and what he's about. i think you will too.
find out more about will and his kickstarter campaign at willknaak.com
