hello my friends! i hope this podcast finds you enjoying the summer. it's hot in texas. i spent the weekend traveling around texas playing some shows with SKYROCKET!. dallas on thursday, houston on friday and austin on saturday. they were all good shows. i was also on a couple of podcasts. one was austin sessions, that was fun. the other was a "game night" episode of the hodgecast. it's already up. it was really fun. there were 8 people playing a star trek themed mystery game and a lot of booze. hey! speaking of podcasts...

hello my friends! i put this episode out a day early because i'm heading out for town with SKYROCKET! for a couple of days and i don't trust hotel internet service. it's too damn slow. so yes, i'm going to dallas today, thursday, 7/25 and we're playing at the house of blues in dallas tomorrow, friday, 7/26, we're playing at the house of blues in houston. saturday, 7/27, we're playing at the belmont in austin with cotton mather for their single release. busy, busy weekend. don't forget, next wednesday, july 31st, 7:30 pm live podcast at antone's in austin tx! my guests will be members of western youth and the love leighs and christy hays. i'll talk to the bands and then they'll play! i think it will be a great night of fun and music. come out. here's more info... https://www.facebook.com/events/131683847041129/
my guest for episode 191 is one 0f my favorite comics making his second appearance on the show, the very funny, jake flores! jake was on around a year and a half ago and since then, i've seen him perform a bunch and we've become friends. jake is about to record his first stand up album for stand up records (lewis black, doug stanhope, patton oswalt, marc maron) and he's recording here in austin at the new movement theater on sunday, august 4th 2013 with two shows at 7 & 9. if you're here, you should go. anyway, jake came by and we got to catch up about the incredible comedy scene in austin, putting on shows, "what are we doing?", his spite club shows and podcasts, touring, performing every night, cool posters and much, much more! i think jake is a great guy and i always have a great time seeing him perform and hanging out with him. i'm sure you will too.

our guest for episode 190 is talented symphonic percussionist/drummer, ian fry. i didn't know ian before this interview, but he came to me through my old friend p. kellach waddle (composer/bass player for the austin symphony) who you might remember from episode 31 of this podcast. anyway, kel has composed some music for symphonic percussion for ian and they'll be performing it this sunday (7/28) at the blackerby violin shop recital hall in austin, tx. ian also plays drums in the amazing band, mrs. glass and many more. so, ian came by and i got to know him. it turns out he's an incredibly smart and interesting person. we talked about growing in southern california, getting into the drums, eastman college, spending every waking moment playing, moving to iowa and not playing, travel, learning the tabla, playing in front of 100, 000 people, moving to austin, mrs. glass, i test his knowledge of casio beats and much, much more. i hope you enjoy getting to know ian fry as much as i did.

hello friends! i hope you're all doing well. i've had a great week. tuesday night i got to play with the bluebonnets. that was so fun! they're such a great rock and roll band. i'll be doing something with kathy valentine. stay tuned and we'll announce some shows in a couple of months when we get it together. in other news, we have a live podcast coming up on wednesday, july 31st at 8pm at antone's in austin, texas! our guests will be, Western Youth, Christy Hays, and then the Love Leighs. all of the bands will play after the live podcast, so you'll know a little bit about the artists before you get to hear them play. come out! doors are at 7!
our guest for episode 189 is phenomenal singer/songwriter, colin gilmore! i've known colin and his family for over 20 years. he's a super sweet guy and he's just released his 5th album, the wild and hollow. i've always been a fan of colin's and i was glad he was able to stop by the apartment and talk about his journey. we talked about his whole trip... crazy punk teen running the streets of lubbock, moving to austin with his dad, jimmie dale gilmore, his punk bands, touring with his dad and playing solo, his songwriting career, his new album, the wild and hollow and much more. plus, my friend stephanie stopped by for coffee. i hope you enjoy my conversation with colin. i did.

hello friends! i hope this episode finds you happy and healthy. things are going well. if you're receiving this on the day it comes out, i'll be playing some songs with the bluebonnets tonight  tuesday, july 16th 2013 at 10:30 at the continental club in austin, tx. i used to have an all girl (except for me) band a couple of years ago with kathy and dominique from the bluebonnets. anyway, we've been rehearsing and i LOVE playing with them. it's so fun and they ROCK!!!!!! kathy and i have been talking about getting something going... i want it to be like that. fuckin' straight-up rock and roll!!!! let's get down!
my guest for episode 188 is talented singer/songwriter, ellen o'meara. ellen has just put out her first album, "take me to the desert". in fact, ellen has pretty much just started playing and writing songs over the last couple of years! most people wouldn't be making their debut album with some of austin's best musicians, but ellen did because she's totally amazing. not only is she a naturally gifted singer/songwriter, she's also an amazingly humble and and sweet person. she came by the apartment and we talked about everything... growing up in west texas, nursing, lack of pop culture, old souls, discovering music, "you should be on the voice", getting out there and doing it and making an album with great musicians. i had a great time getting to know ellen. she's a special person and i think you're gonna like her too.

hello my friends! we are currently in the depths of summer and goddammit, it feels good. i've been swimming a lot this week. i play tonight, but i have the rest of the weekend off. i'll be swimming, going to see fitz and the tantrums, grilling and probably seeing a movie. those are some pretty good summer activities. oh!!! quick plug... i'll be playing THIS coming tuesday, july 16th 2013 with the bluebonnets at the continental club in austin, tx! i'm really excited about this. the bluebonnets are and all-female rock and roll band led by my dear friend kathy valentine and they kick your ass. i rehearsed with them this week and it was like garage rock wet dream. if you're in austin next tuesday, come out and join in the rock and roll!!!!
my guest for episode 187 is musician/singer/songwriter/producer/stage actor/film actor/director, jesse dayton!!! i've gotten to see jesse play a couple of times over the last month and it's been great. i've known jesse for almost 20 years and he's always been an intensely creative and prolific artist. a true artist constantly finding new outlets for his creativity. he's also a great hang! we've been talking about doing this for almost two years since i first started this podcast. anyway, we finally got it together and jesse came to the apartment and we got to sit down and talk about his new movie, "zombex", cutting his musical teeth in houston, the three "heys", playing with waylon jennings, johnny cash and willie nelson, johnny clegg & the night creatures, rob zombie and "halloween 2", jesse sings kinky and much, much, much more! i hope you enjoy my conversation with this old friend. i sure did.

my guest for episode 186 is the very talented fiddle playing singer/songwriter, katie holmes. katie just put out a new album, "the red balloon".  it's fantastic! i saw play a couple of months ago at my friend, todd wolfson's monthly jam at monkey nest here in austin. i was totally blown away at her level of talent. her songs and how she approached the songs she didn't write. i reached out to her and invited her on the show and we talked about everything... starting on fiddle at 5 years old, growing up spending time with fiddle greats, playing shows, making "the red balloon", her summer jam and much, much more. i hope you enjoy getting to know katie as much as i did.

my guest for episode 185 is the phenomenal, emily bell! emily just put out a new album, "in technicolor" and she is out on tour promoting it as you read this. i heard a song from emily's album and i was really blown away. i reached out to her and asked her to come in for a chat. she came over and we talked about, being a kid in college station, going to a high school for the performing arts, making music, moving to l.a. to work with some big songwriters, moving back to texas and rediscovering herself and her sound and working with a loved one. i really enjoyed our conversation. i hope you do too.

Hello friends! i hope this episode finds you well. this episode was supposed to come out last friday, 6/28, but i had solo gigs, skyrocket gigs, podcast interviews, slow hotel internet connections and general insanity. sorry we're late, but we have an awesome show for you today! also, a quick heads-up, i'll be participating in a live podcast called, "the soundtrack series" at the long center in austin, tx this saturday, july 6th. check it out. it's really cool and i'm very honored to have been asked to be a part of it. here's a link: www.soundtrackseries.com
we have a big show about rock and roll for you today. my guests for episode 184 are the band, death and new york's, wild adriatic! first up is death. death has an incredible story. so incredible that they have had a documentary made about them that opened last friday, 6/28. the documentary tells the story of three brothers in the early 70's in detroit, playing a style of music way ahead of it's time. a style of music we would come to know as PUNK. my friend bevis, who works with the band, invited me out last week to see a special screening of the documentary and watch a special performance by the band. the movie is amazing, their performance was awesome and i got to hang out with them and they're great guys going through an exceptionally unique situation and experience. i got to sit down with the guys the day before the movie opened i think you're really going them. here's a link to the trailer and the story. you should go see this movie... http://abandcalleddeath.com/
also on the show, upstate new york rock and roll trio, wild adriatic. i first heard them last year when a friend of mine started working with them. i love their raw rock and roll and their energy. i was really excited when i found out they had time to stop by for a chat while they were on a u.s. tour earlier this month. we talked about their evolution and journey, small town in upstate new york, going from quartet to trio, making albums, touring and much more. i loved getting to hang out with these guys and i enjoyed our conversation. i'm sure you will too. they're great band made-up of sweet guys. check out their music and videos here, http://www.wildadriatic.com/
