merry christmas! i hope you're all in a good place. i hope i'm in a good place. i wish you all happiness, love and peace this holiday season. i will be on my way home this christmas day. i'm going to spend the weekend back home with my loved one, zuri. maybe we'll go to a movie, see a band, play some yatzee... end of the holiday decompression and relaxation. because even if i wasn't working any of my "jobs" this week, being with family and that whole thing can be pretty intense and a couple of days of quiet and mellow vibes. i'll talk to you on tuesday and fill you in on star wars, family time, last-minute shopping, christmas and more. merry christmas!my guest for episode 449 is behind-the-scenes texas music legend, casey monahan. if you don't know casey, he was a writer for the austin american-statesman,  he was the director of the texas state music office for 25 years under governors ann richards, george w. bush and rick perry, he created the texas music register, he was on the team that brought the grammy chapter to texas in 1994, he produced roky erickson and much, much more. in january 2015, when the new regime took over the texas capital, casey was let go. the music community was outraged, but casey turned his energy toward his family and now is back at work consulting music businesses and more. casey is a great hang, a wealth of music knowledge and a real sweetheart. i hope you enjoy my conversation with casey. i sure did. let's get down! merry christmas! -jg

Episode 448: The Trishas

Tuesday Dec 22, 2015

Tuesday Dec 22, 2015

hello friends! i hope you're all doing well. i should be doing well. i'm spending the christmas week with my family in houston and these shows have all been lade in advance and i'm taking a legitimate week off from my work. i don't do that much. some weeks are slow with skyrocket, solo stuff or the podcast, but i never really just "unplug" for a week and not do any work. i'm looking forward to this break. hopefully, i'm enjoying it. my guests for episode 448 are americana darlings, the trishas! yes. i know they're not currently "super-active" as a band, but i have been trying to get them on the show since i started it. luckily they were playing some shows in new york, south texas and austin a few weeks ago and i got them to stop by bright and early one morning after a show. it was even more fun and hilarious than i imagined it would be. these are some of the most talented, hard working, prolific artists i know. they're also the most entertaining group of people to be around. i hope they work together more simply because something magical happens when they're together. i hope you enjoy my morning with the trishas as much as i did. let's get down!ciao! -jg

Friday Dec 18, 2015

hello friends! i hope you're all ready for christmas. i am not... yet. i think i'll be able to knock out most of it today. this time of year gets exhausting, doesn't it? i played a solo show at the townsend last night. it was good. i played with brandon kinder from the rocketboys. he has a new solo side project called the wealthy west. he sent me a link to a new album coming out in a few weeks and it's absolutely gorgeous. look for brandon to be on the show soon. my guests for episode 447 are technicolor psychedelic sextet, calliope musicals! they've just finished up a new album due out in april 2016, time owes you nothing, at the legendary sound city studios in los angeles. (the same studio featured in the dave grohl doc, "sound city".) get the skinny on them at calliopemusicals.com. they've taken their colorfully explosive stage show on the festival circuit this year, playing austin city limits festival, joshua tree festival, utopiafest and more. four members of the six-piece made it in and we had a hilarious conversation about how a band so big and so creative makes it happen like they do. i hope you enjoy getting to know calliope musicals as much as i did. let's get down!ciao! -jg

Wednesday Dec 16, 2015

Wednesday Dec 16, 2015

hello friends! i hope you're all doing well. things are good here except, i took my car in because the window wouldn't roll up. they called today and told me they could fix my window, but then went down a list of like $1,200 worth of work that needs to be done to it. that's a little stressful during a slow work month and the christmas season. i also have to go to houston and back twice over the next week. might be time for a new car...my guest for episode 446 is singer/songwriter/actor chris knudson also known as kanude! i've known kanude for a few years and he's always been a great guy and great songwriter. he has a christmas song, "best christmas ever" available now at his bandcamp page along with several great albums. we have a great conversation about rooming with owen wilson at boarding school, scoring "el mariachi", living in berlin, nyc, houston, making records, playing at church and much, much more. i hope you enjoy getting to know kanude. i did. let's get down!ciao! -jg
