Episode 570: Fragile Rock

Tuesday Feb 28, 2017

Tuesday Feb 28, 2017

Hello friends! First off, I have to apologize for not putting out a show on Friday. I actually had an emotional meltdown on Wednesday night which left me exhausted and depressed on Thursday and then i woke up feeling a cold or something coming on on Friday. I played gigs in San Antonio and Houston on Friday and Saturday. I was sick, playing shows and driving all over the place. I spent Sunday sleeping and just laying in bed. Today, I'm going to the Dr. to find out what's going on. Anyway, I'll fill you in on everything on Friday's show.
My guests for episode 570 are Emily Cawood and Ryan Hill from "the world's only emo puppet band", Fragile Rock! Their brand new e.p., Weepy, came out a few weeks ago and they were featured on NPR's "All Songs Considered" earlier this month. They'll be playing a couple of SXSW shows on Monday, March 13th at Spider House and Sidewinder. Go to fragilerockband.com for more info. Emily and Ryan and I have a great conversation about how leader Brently Heilbron came up with the idea of an emo puppet band while going through a divorce, their songwriting process, their odd audition for "America's Got Talent", the real definition of "disco nap", serious improv, how Bowie would have loved them and much, much more. I hope you enjoy getting to know these creative and entertaining people. I sure did. Let's get down!

It's a storytelling/improv show like U.C.B's "Asscat" shows. I highly recommend the show to everyone. the actors are all amazing at what they do. The show is extremely funny and it's something to do that's outside the norm. Do it. It's fun.
The amazingly talented and always entertaining, Billy Harvey returns to the show for episode 569! His brilliant new album Elephants In The Room comes out today, Tuesday, February 21st 2017. Billy stopped by while he was in town playing a show and moving his studio from Los Angeles to start a new chapter of his life in Nashville. Billy and I have a great conversation about making Elephants In The Room, his band Reluctant Apostles, his upcoming release with Salim Nourallah and Alex Dezen called NHD, fatherhood, moving to nashville and much, much more! I hope you enjoy my conversation with Billy. I sure did. Let's get down!

Hello friends! I'm a little late putting this out because I went to see Sphynx last night and then went and sang karaoke. I was drunk and terrible which is a great combo right? Anyway, Sphynx was incredible. Their new e.p. is out and it's awesome. Other than that, I want to invite you to a storytelling/improv show I'm doing tomorrow at The New Movement Theater here in Austin. It's called The Megaphone Show. I'll be telling stories and then an improv group will act them out. Should be fun. If you're in town, come out and say hi. Here's a link The Megaphone Show
My dear friend, the amazing Ian Moore returns to the show for episode 568! His gorgeous new album, Strange Days comes out next Tuesday, February 21. Ian was in town rehearsing with his new band and they're hitting the road on the west coast starting March 2nd and ending up in Austin for SXSW. Ian and I have a great conversation about making Strange Days and his last e.p. The Noble Art, selling out vs. making a living, his new non-profit, SMASH bringing affordable health care to Seattle musicians, his songwriting workshops, family and much, much more! Hello friends! I hope you're all having a decent Valentine's Day. I have no plans. I don't want to participate in a day that magnifies my relationship short-comings and loneliness. However, it's going to be happening al around me today, so I should just stay in. I DID just hit an all-time low a little while ago, My grandma called to wish me a happy Valentine's Day. Now, I know that's sweet, but there is a level of sadness to knowing that she woke up this morning thinking, "No one is going to wish Johnny a happy Valentine's Day today. I better do it, so that he knows someone loves him". Happy Valentine's Day!
The amazingly talented and always entertaining, Jane Ellen Bryant returns to the show today! Jane's brilliant, new single, "All In My Head" drops THIS Friday, February 17th. The song was co-produced by Jane and the great Chris "Frenchie" Smith and recorded at The Bubble. She's having a single release show this Friday February 17th at C-Boy's Heart & Soul here in Austin, TX. To get the single or Jane's latest e.p. Twenties and find out where she's playing, go to janeellenbryant.com. Jane and I sat down an hour before the innauguration and had a great conversation about co-producing "All In My Head", the innauguration, playing shows, keeping a band together and much, much more. I hope you enjoy my conversation with this amazingly talented woman. I sure did. Let's get down!

Hello gang! I'm trying to regroup from my 23 hours and 45 minutes in Las Vegas the last couple of days. I went there to play with The Bodeans. I had a total blast playing with them and hanging out. I've been listening to The Bodeans since I was in high school and their first album came out. I used to sit around and sit play along and sing harmonies with their albums, so it was kind of mind blowing to be onstage with them, including the legendary Kenny Aronoff on drums, playing along and singing harmonies, but for real. They're all wonderful people and I had a great trip.
Austin pop duo, Kady Rain and Ben Bazzrea return to the show for episode 566! Their brilliant e.p. All I Ever Wanted is out and you can find it at kadyrain.com. They're playing a show tomorrow, Saturday February 11th at Indian Roller here in Austin. We have a great conversation about Lady Gaga's Superbowl performance, sleeping naked, douchebag jeans, celebrity teeth whiteness, their latest collaborations, working on their live show, we answer the question "Should Kady dye her hair green?" and much, much more! I hope you enjoy our chat. I sure did. Let's get down!

Episode 565: Sphynx #5

Tuesday Feb 07, 2017

Tuesday Feb 07, 2017

Hello friends! I hope you're all holding up in this crazy time of extreme insanity. On one hand, it seems like the world is falling apart and on the other, it seems like everything is fine and the news is trying to freak us out 24 hours a day. I went to lake Charles, LA with SKYROCKET! on Saturday and realized that when people put on costumes, drink heavily and let themselves give-in to the joy of music and dancing and celebrating being alive, the insanity that we face on a day-to-day basis, falls away like a bad dream. Of course, it's always there waiting for you when you wake up the next day hungover and wishing everything would just stop.
Cory, Aaron and Todd, better known as the band, Sphynx return to the show for episode 565! Their epic new e.p., Floppy Disco comes out this Friday February 10th. Their playing an e.p. release show in Austin next Thursday, February 16th at Stubb's. Find out more on when they're coming to a town near you or how to get their music by going to sphynxmuxic.com. We have a great conversation about Floppy Disco, working with drummer/producer, Ken Coomer (Wilco, Fita & The Tantrums), hanging out in Nashville, playing weddings, touring and much, much more. Sphynx is one of my favorite bands and some of my favorite people. I hope you enjoy our copnversation. I sure did. Let's get down!
