hello love muffins! i hope you're doing well. digging into the week. i am. it's been pretty cold the last couple of days, so i haven't been running. it makes me feel lazy. there's a treadmill in the gym at my apartments, but i just can't do the treadmill. i get really bored, i can't tell how far i'm really going and the whole time, i just wish i was outside. hopefully it'll warm up. i saw paula nelson play last night with special guest, todd v. wolfson. it was really good. i think i'm going to try to get her on the show. i was going to ask her last night, but i had to leave before they finished. she was really good and seems like a sweetheart. i'll keep you updated...
my guest for episode 157 is composer/arranger/multi-instrumentalist, stephen grisham barber. i love stephen. i met him at some point in the late 90's when he was working with alejandro escovedo. i have hung out with him from time to time and i've always wanted to sit down and talk to him about his life and career. i asked him to come by and tell me about his journey, and being the sweetheart that he is, he did. we talk about his talented family, including author john grisham, growing up in west texas, making music with the first eric johnson vehicle, the electromagnets, moving to new york and working with david byrne, keith richards, gilberto gil and many more. we talk about all of stephen's amazing projects in classical, jazz, rock and film scoring. stephen isn't just an incredible artist, he's a great hang. i hope you enjoy our conversation. i did.

zero dark boner
hello friends! so, after 3 failed attempts to see zero dark 30 (just last night), i finally saw it today. it's great, just like people say. my weekend was extremely low-key. i wasn't feeling too good. i thought i was getting the flu. thank god, i wasn't. i want to remind those of you who live in houston that i am playing a solo acoustic show THIS saturday, february 2, 2013 at anderson fair. i'll be playing after recent guest, aimee bobruk. if you don't know my music, come out and see the show. i love to entertain. click on this link for info. http://www.facebook.com/events/353530641421544/?fref=ts see you there!
our guest for episode 141 is animator/graphic novelist, yehudi mercado! yehudi's 2nd graphic novel, "pantalones, tx", comes out in february. i've read it, it's fantastic. it's funny. he's funny. i just read his amazing first graphic novel, "buffalo speedway" about one phenomenal night in a pizza delivery boy's life. definitely worth the read. our mutual friend, nettie reynolds, hooked us up and i went over to yehudi's house a few weeks ago and he told me his story. so, i hope you enjoy our conversation. i did.

Saturday Oct 20, 2012

lo-fi jedi!
hello everyone! i hope you're well. i just got in from washington d.c... a quick one-day trip. i went up with skyrocket! to play a benefit. it was a great time. we had a good show and i walked around on thursday when we got there and the next day, i went running all around the white house and the national mall. i had a great time doing that. i also realized as i was running, that i don't cook enough. i live by myself and it's hard to motivate to cook for just yourself, but i'm going to do it. i need to eat healthier and i need to be a better cook. so, here we go. next week, i'm going to get all the right pots, pans, spices and knives to cook and start picking out recipes... maybe a couple a week. do you know any good recipes? send them to me. thanks!
my guest for episode 113 ishome-recording lo-fi-jedi,  jp pfertner, also known as, oh look out. there's a group of folks i know that grew up recording and writing on four-track cassette machines. jp is one of those guys. so am i! so, we had a lot to talk about.... from learning four-track and music to playing with bands to starting built by snow, becoming a father, making his own video (which is absolutely brilliant) and making his latest album, "orchestral fuzz". you can find out more about oh look out at http://ohlookout.com/ you can watch his video for "monster fiction" which is amazing! i hope you enjoy our conversation. i did.

hello everyone! i am staying with two of my dogs for the next two weeks. they are both nudging my hands while i type this. i just realized that i think they're jealous because they think i'm petting this computer, which coincidentally, is their only rival for my attention. i wish jessi and beni would come back. i don't talk about it much on the podcast but i miss the hell out of them. they'll be back in august. thank god.
don't forget! if you're in austin, i'll be playing this sunday at hotel vegas at 7 pm opening for my friend, danny malone who plays at 8.
my guest for episode 60 is my dear friend and the amazingly talented, alexandra valenti! alexandra directed my videos for "back of a magazine" and "you can't pretend forever" (which she is in as well.) as well as the artwork for my album "el payaso" and tons of other bands... i met alexandra around 8 or 9 years ago through friends. they thought we would be great friends... they were right. i was glad alexandra was able to come by the apartment and talk to me about growing up in washington as the daughter of one of washington and hollywood's biggest influence peddlers, college at berkley, disappointing hollywood scriptwriting experience, lying her way into cool jobs assisting amazing photographers, video directing, album cover making, photography, art for art's sake and of course, the urban chicken movement. check out alexandra's work here www.alexandravalenti.com i always have a good time with alexandra. i think you can tell. i hope you enjoy our conversation. i sure did.

hi! how are you? i can't believe it's already december. it's time to make holiday plans (or if you're organized, they're made.), shop (or if you're organized...) and give. speaking of giving... my friend, shane "the rock and roll dentist" matt, just put together a christmas album called, "holiday haam jam". buying the album benefits H.A.A.M. (Health Alliance for Austin Musicians), which is austin's extremely unique organization that provides low-cost healthcare for musicians. find out more about H.A.M.M. and BUY the album, "holiday haam jam" by going to http://www.myhaam.org/index.php
my guest for episode 28 is director/photographer, andrew shapter. i've known and known of, andrew for years and years but i've never gotten to sit down and talk to him at length. i am really glad i did. andrew made a beautiful movie called, "before the music dies"  a documentary inspired by a conversation about music with his musician brother just before his untimely passing. it's basically about the death of the "old" music business and what musicians are doing to adapt. it's narrated by forest whitaker and stars, erykah badu, doyle bramhall II, elvis costello, dave matthews, ?uestlove, steve poltz and my liars & saints bandmate, kacy crowley. it's an eye-opening and inspiring film. you should watch it. i hope you enjoy my conversation with andrew, i did. to find out more about andrew, go to http://www.andrewshapter.com/
thank you for listening. ciao! -jg
