hello friends! i hope you're all doing well. i am getting it together to leave to new york at 6 am for a couple of shows with SKYROCKET! and while i'm there, i'll be doing a couple of podcasts which you'll be hearing soon. anyway, if you're in nyc, come out to the hill country bar b que in manhattan and see SKYROCKET! saturday, june 7th at 9pm. also, while i'm on the promo train, come out to strange brew in austin, tx on tuesday june 17th where we will be recording a live "how did i get here? podcast with our very special guests, funny man charlie hodge, singer/songwriter graham wilkinson and the amazing band, sphynx! there's no cover and a good time will be had by all. speaking of live podcasts from strange guests for episode 280 "live at strange brew 2" are trish murphy, jazz mills, elizabeth mcqueen and suzanna choffel! we did this live this past tuesday and we had a blast. we heard a childhood radio recording from trish and her siblings from when she was 5 years old, we found out jazz mill has gotten into managing bands, we found out that elizabeth mcqueen has started several bands and we found out that suzanna choffel made her pledge music video with my ex-wife. awkward? listen and find out as i get to the bottom of things like "frenemies" etc. we had a great time. thanks to everyone who came out and thank you to the ladies for making this a great conversation. let's get down!ciao! -jg

hello friends of nature! i hope you're all living high on the hog and other weird phrases that i don't understand. i'm good. i had a weekend of playing with SKYROCKET!. we played a graduation party and the next night we played comicpalooza in houston. good times. i'm about to go over some songs because i'm sitting in with the great jeff plankenhorn tonight at strange brew. i'm looking forward to it. he's having me out because i'm taking over his tuesday residency this summer. i'm doing a couple of live podcasts in june and then playing and hosting a music showcase night in july and august. yes!!! if you live in austin, you should come out to our live podcast recording on tuesday, june 3rd at strange brew in austin. my guests will be suzanna choffel, trish murphy, jazz mils and elizabeth mcqueen. come out and be a part of this show!my guests for episode 277 are the amazingly talented amy lavere and will sexton! amy is a songwriter and amazing stand-up bass player. her new album, runaway's diary just came out today on archer records. the album is absolutely gorgeous. amy and will came by before they head out to the u.k. and the mid-west and west coast for a record release tour. i just met amy a few months ago and heard her and will play and i thought the sound that they made was beautiful. so, i reached out and finally got her in to find out what she's all about. will is a dear old friend of mine (almost 30 years) and one of the musicians/people that respect most in this world. they came by and we got into the whole thing, being a tour guide at sun studios, making records, touring as a couple and much, much more. i hope you enjoy our conversation as much as i did.ciao! -jg

hello friends! i am up early this friday morning getting my shit together to head out of town with SKYROCKET! for three days. if you're in houston tomorrow, saturday 4/5/14, we'll be at the continental club. come out! it's a good time. this week i've spent a lot of time with comics. monday i played with sweat and lotion at the cap city comedy club for the live charlie hodge show, tuesday i talked to john tole for the podcast. if you listen to the show, you'll know we talked a year ago and it's the only episode i accidentally erased... this one is so good, i can't wait fo you to hear it. it'll be up in a month or so. yesterday i recorded a theme song for my pal, lucas molandes and his new podcast, "good grief". it's a sweet electronic dream pop jam. we had a good time. lots of laughs. i hope you're laughing.episode 261 is another sxsw 2014 double-header! first up, angelo moore and the brand new step! i have been a fan of angelo's since the 80's when i first heard fishbone. angelo has been making solo music for a number of years now since fishbone split up. he's back with an amazing band, the brand new step. they have a new album out and i got to see them play live and it was amazing. i loved talking to angelo and his bandmates. sadly it was a little too loud, but hopefully you'll enjoy it. i did. my second guest for episode 261 is the talented singer/songwriter/musician, kayce laine! kayce was on a couple of epsides ago with joseph king. she was here playing keys and bas with him. she gave me some songs to listen to and i found out she was doing an instore while she was here, so i went. we had a chat at a wine bar. kayce is a great songwriter and a great musician. when we met, it felt like i had met one of my tribe. her e.p. , lucid is on bandcap. check it out! i hope you enjoy this sxsw double-header. let's get down!ciao! -jf

hello friends! i hope you're all winning the gold in your lives today. things are going well here. the weather keeps changing every day and now it's emergency cold with schools starting a couple of hours later for the 3rd time in in a month. not to talk about the weather, but man, it's weird when it changes from a high of 34 to a high of 77 to freezing  to sunny and 75 all in one week. weird. i've been busy working on a lot of different things lately. i'll keep you posted.  my guest for episode 246 is the talented and enchanting, gina chavez! gina's new album, UP. ROOTED comes out today, tuesday, february 11th 2014! the album is loaded with all the bad-ass latin jams you would expect from austin's "best latin artist". anyway, i had a great time getting to know gina through this podcast. i never knew about her charitable work, her 8 months in el salvador teaching young girls, nina arriba, a college fund that chavez co-founded for impoverished you women in el salvador. gina and i have a great conversation. we get to know what makes her tick and where all of that beautiful music comes from. i hope you enjoy getting to know gina. i sure did.ciao!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!hello friends! i hope you have a safe & happy new year and an incredible 2014! i would like to thank you all for listening. 2013 has been a great year for the show and i can't wait to see what 2014 brings. do you want to now what i'm doing for new year? i'm playing at rockefeller hall in houston tonight with SKYROCKET! it's our big new years eve show. i've   made some resolutions for 2014, 1. write more songs. 2. quit the smoking 3. eat better... i can do it. hey! i'm playing a solo show on thursday, january 2nd at strange brew in austin, tx. i play early, at 6:30. i'm serious. 6:30 - 7:30. if you're in austin, come out and let me entertain you.  my guest for episode 234 is drummer/glass artist/photographer, vincent ambrosone. i haven't known vinnie very long, but we've become pals over the last couple of years. i like his playing a lot, he's very funny and he's a really nice guy. i knew he was playing a lot with the bleu edmonson band, but i learned a lot through this entertaining conversation. we talked about his hatred of kanye, growing up in corning, ny, being the youngest of 8 kids, documentaries, how he became a glass artist, what brough him to austin and muc, much more. i hope enjoy getting to know vinnie. i did. happy new year!

hello friends! i hope life is treating you well. things are good here. i had a good weekend. i played a lot. this week is busy... i'll be playing with SKYROCKET! at the house of blues -dallas, tx on thursday 7/25, the house of blues -houston, tx on friday 7/26 and the belmont in austin, tx on saturday 7/27! come out and see the spectacle that is SKYROCKET!. also, we have a live podcast recording next week at antone's in austin, tx. my guests will be christy hayes and members of western youth and the love leighs. after i talk to these fine musicians, they'll play a show. so you'll get to know them, then hear their music! a whole experience! so, come out to the legendary antone's night club in austin, tx on wednesday, july 31st 2013. doors are at 7:00, live podcast recording at 7:30, bands at 9! click here for more info let's get down!!!!
our guest for episode 190 is talented symphonic percussionist/drummer, ian fry. i didn't know ian before this interview, but he came to me through my old friend p. kellach waddle (composer/bass player for the austin symphony) who you might remember from episode 31 of this podcast. anyway, kel has composed some music for symphonic percussion for ian and they'll be performing it this sunday (7/28) at the blackerby violin shop recital hall in austin, tx. ian also plays drums in the amazing band, mrs. glass and many more. so, ian came by and i got to know him. it turns out he's an incredibly smart and interesting person. we talked about growing in southern california, getting into the drums, eastman college, spending every waking moment playing, moving to iowa and not playing, travel, learning the tabla, playing in front of 100, 000 people, moving to austin, mrs. glass, i test his knowledge of casio beats and much, much more. i hope you enjoy getting to know ian fry as much as i did.
