Hello friends! I hope you all had a good weekend. I'm doing well. I've been working on a lot of busy work today. It's not super-fun but it leaves you woth a feeling of accomplishment when you finish... and that's pretty good. Right? hello friends! i hope you're all braving the extreme heat that is upon us. i'm doing well. just working on some music, booking a live podcast for sept. 9th (details coming soon), prepping for 3 podcasts i'm doing tomorrow etc. so, i listened to the american top 50 chart on spotify this morning while i was running. i probably heard about 15 to 20 songs on shuffle. i wasn't very moved by anything which made me kind of sad. then i realized that there is so much non-mainstream music out there, so much of it comes through this show. i'm really lucky to be in the position to have so much music coming through and getting turned on to so much stuff. it gives me hope. go find some new music. it feels good.my guest for episode 403 is ocean of stars leader, danny grochow! this is danny's second time on the show. he was on a couple of years ago talking about some solo material he was releasing and now he's back with with a new e.p. from his band, ocean of stars. danny is a great guy who is out there playing bass and guitar as a sideman but still makes the time to write, record and perform his original instrumental-prog-rock. we have a great conversation about four track cassette recording, the rpm challenge, finding musicians, writing complex instrumental music, answering want ads and much, much more. i i hope you enjoy our conversation. i sure did. let's get down!ciao! -jg

hello friends! i hope you're getting into your new year in style and with all the hope you had on new years eve. i spent the day running errands and i had lunch with my old friend, katrina. it was great catching up with her. i want to thank the folks that wrote in about the dwight twilley episode. i am hoping to get dwight in a face-to-face situation where we can really talk. i'm glad we did it. i'm going to try to do more phoners if i can get ahold of folks. do you like them? hey! if you're in austin tonight, friday, jan 9th 2015, SKYROCKET! is playing at the one-2-one bar on south lamar. we go on at 10. come out. say hi.my guest for episode 341 is my old friend and jazz great, elias haslanger! elias was on the show two years ago when he put out his album, church on monday. since he was last on, his "church on monday" shows at the continental club gallery have grown, they released a live album, live at the gallery, that has received amazing critical acclaim 4 1/2 stars in downbeat magazine and climbed to #14 on the jazz radio charts. also, tomorrow, elias and his church on monday band will be playing with alejandro escovedo at the acl moody theater as alejandro's orchestra. eli is a great musician and a real inspiration for staying inspired. i hope you enjoy our conversation. i sure did. let's get down!ciao! -jg

hello friends! i hope you all a fantastic christmas! i did. i spent it with my family in houston doing what we do best, hanging out drinking, dancing, eating and celebrating. good times! what do you do the day after christmas? i'm back home. i get back to work playing with skyrocket tomorrow in san antonio. but what should i do today? well, i'll tell you. i got a $75 gift certificate to whole foods and i'm going to go there and spend it. thank you coni, my ex-stepmom. she's nice. i got some good gifts, had a good time, you'll hear all about it in the intro. i hope you all had a great week. my guest for episode 337 is saxophonist and entrepreneur, greg williams! i've played some shows with greg over the years and i've always loved his playing, he's a total pro and we always have a good hang. anyway, i've been wanting to get him on the show to talk about how he makes it happen. he always has a lot of things going on and stays busy and makes a living. that's not an easy thing to do these days. well, check it out, greg is not scared to work. he's learned music and the business inside and out and is now forging some new professional ground with some ideas that are turning heads. check it out. he's a great talent and a great guy. my friend, greg williams. let's get down!ciao! -jg

hello friends! i hope you all had an amazing labor day weekend. closed the door on another successful summer. i labored the whole weekend. i played thursday, friday, saturday and sunday. i played at the house of blues in houston on saturday and i took zuri. we stopped on the way into town to see my grandmother and my aunts and cousin. we had a nice visit and a fun trip. i got one of my grandfather's backgammon boards and zuri and i broke it out last night and played 6 games in a row! i love backgammon. hey! if you're in austin tonight i will be playing at strange brew lounge side for my tuesday residency, "johnny goudie & friends". sadly, this is the 2nd to last one. i'm gonna miss it. come out tonight, my guests are the amazing erin ivey and the legendary, kimmie rhodes who will be playing with her ultra-talented son, gabe. music starts at 8. do it!my guest for episode 305 is french rocker, hugo de saint-quentin from the band, hooka hey! i had the pleasure of sharing the bill with hooka hey on a balcony tv taping on sunday. the band is a raw rock and roll band. the kind you feel might be missing from today's mainstream landscape. i know i do. well, hugo and i talk about that and much, much more. he just moved here from paris, put a band together, recorded an e.p. at two of austin's best studios and they're playing shows al over the state. look or hooka hey coming to a town near you. i had a great time getting to know hugo. i'm sure you will too. let's get down!ciao! -jg

hello my friends! i hope you're well. i'm doing just fine.  just framed an awesome moog synthesizer poster and put it up in the studio. maybe that will make me sit down and write some songs... i had a great weekend. i played with skyrocket in houston on friday, then played a solo show on saturday. i played at anderson fair with aimee bobruck and dony wynn. it was great! thanks to everyone who came out and made it such a special night. i'll be playing another solo show this week in austin at strange brew! i play this saturday, february 9th at 9 pm opening for tony scalzo from fastball. here's a link to the show. http://www.facebook.com/events/227564994045512/ come out and say hi!
my guest for episode 143 is singer/songwriter, amy atchley. i've been friends with amy for over 20 years now and it was great to finally sit down with her and catch up. we talked about her early musical development, moving to austin and starting faboo, her band hush, her move to new york city and back, her long, loving marriage, motherhood and so much more. she's currently recording a new album and plays with her band regularly at flipnotics in austin. i really enjoyed our conversation. i hope you do too.

my guest for episode 132 is the phenomenal singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist, brandy zdan. i've known brandy for a couple of years now. we've never had the chance to really sit down and talk until now. it was fantastic. brandy told me about her journey... growing up in winnipeg, canada, recording and touring with the juno-nominated duo, twilight hotel, making the move to austin, playing as a sideperson with bands like the trishas and making a solo album with producer george reiff due out next spring.  brandy is super cool. i hope you enjoy our conversation. i did.

oy vey!
hello everyone! i hope you are in a quiet and safe place. i am not. i'm at my grandmother's house and there are people yelling, dogs barking and old people falling down. it's 9:13 a.m. and i'm contemplating a very strong cocktail and a xanax... merry christmas? maybe this experience will be merrier under the influence. i got so drunk last night, i rode my aunt's rascal 5 blocks to 7-11 and bought cigarettes for everyone in the family wether or not they smoke. some might call this living the dream. anyway, if i survive this experience, i'll tell you all about it on friday's show. but seriously, i hope you're having a good holiday.
my guest for episode 131 is my incredibly talented friend, elias haslanger. he is an amazing jazz saxophone player and an all around amazing human being. i feel like a better person for having talked to him. elias has been on a great artistic journey and we talk all about it. from learning his instrument, to our high school stage band and teacher, his various musical projects and his commitment to his family. after our conversation, i realized that i like him even more than i thought. i hope you enjoy our conversation. i did.
