Hello friends! I hope you had a great weekend. This is a big week in Austin music. The new ALL ATX album, Low Down Violet Crown: Austin Rocks the Blues comes out this Thursday, September, 29th and they're celebrating with a big release show at ACL Moody Theater that same day. The album features 17 tracks with the best of Austin artists covering classic blues rock songs. The concert on Thursday features The Doobie Bros., Bob Schneider, Doyle Bramhall ll, Carolyn Wonderland, Jackie Venson, today's guest Walker Lukens and many more. My guest for episode 528 is the amazing Walker Lukens! Walker is featured on the new All ATX album and he'l be playing the show on Thursday at ACL Moody Theater, but he also has a new e.p. coming out next month. Walker's brilliant new e.p., Never Understood, produced by Jim Eno (Spoon), comes out October 14th on Modern Outsider Records. He'll be playing the ACL Festival on October 8th and playing release shows around Texas in October. We have a great conversation about making Never Understood, growing up in Houston, navigating this crazy music business and much, much more. I hope you enjoy getting to know Walker as much as i did. hello friends! i hope you're all doing well. i'm good. i have the weekend off from skyrocket this weekend. my girlfriend, zuri and i are gonna go to a cook out and doing some weekend things. maybe we'll go see the new ghostbusters... my pal, giulia millanta stops by for a quick chat abut her new kicktstarter campaign to fund her new album, moonbeam parade which comes out september 9th. she'll be previewing her album this sunday, july 17th at strange brew lounge side at 6 pm. you can go to giulia's kickstarter page to see what it's all about.
my guest for episode 506 is the incredibly talented piano/vibes/synth playing singer, laura scarborough. you might know laura as the vibes player in the ultra-flamboyant psychedelic band, the golden dawn arkestra. i had the chance to see them a few weeks ago at a black fret event and they're amazing, like nothing you've ever seen before. laura also plays with kat edmonson, suzanna choffel, bob schnieder's moonight orchestra and many, many more. she covered john lennon's love on the friends of sims album that came out earlier this year and is releasing a solo album later this year. you can find her at laurascarborough.com i hope you enjoy my conversation with laura. i sure did. let's get down!

hello friends! i hope you had a good 4th of july weekend. i did. i got to play at the townsend's one year anniversary party. i played with mark hallman, nathan harlan, steven weisburd and the bluebonnets. what a great time. i'm actually booking some future podcast guests today. is there anyone you'd like to see on the show? i'm reaching out to publicists from all kinds of bands. hopefully, we'll be able to nail down some good ones.

hello friends! i hope you're all doing well. summer is upon us. i haven't chosen my summer jam, but i am zeroing in on something and i'll be announcing my summer jam on monday june 20th (which is the first day of summer) at our live recording of episode 500 at the townsend here in austin. i've been consulting with some friends who taking making a decision on a summer jam a priority in their lives. so, let us know what your summer jam is. post it on our "how did i get here?" facebook page. maybe you can turn me on to something i haven't heard yet.
my guest for episode 497 is singer/songwriter, sally allen. sally just put out an amazing new album, eight track sessions that she recorded on her own on an eight track recorder. sally is also one of the shiny soul sisters singing back-up for recent guest, shinyribs. her cover of tom petty's "refugee" is featured on the friends of sims album that came earlier this year. sally and i had a great conversation about recording eight track sessions, touring with shinyribs, meeting robert plant and much, much more! i hope you enjoy getting to know sally. i sure did. let's get down!

hello friends! i hope you all had a great weekend. i had a good one. photographer, todd wolfson came a shot some amazing photos of my dogs on saturday. the guys were extremely cooperative and at the end, my dog taylor acted all crazy and vicious for the todd. it was hilarious, i'll post some photos of it on the facebook page. then, saturday night skyrocket returned to our old haunt, cedar street courtyard. the show was really fun. people came and they were excited to see us at that venue again. we'll be back there soon. this weekend i finally got on periscope. i don't quite know what to make of it yet. i periscoped a bit, but i'm not sure what or when to periscope. i want to do some stuff with the podcast. i'll let you know when i do. 
my guest for episode 486 is amazing singer/songwriter and one of my favorite people in the world, jeremy nail! jeremy's profoundly powerful and gorgeous new album, my mountain, comes out tomorrow, tuesday, may 3rd. it was produced by the amazing alejandro escovedo, mixed by rock legend, jim scott. the album features the talents of chris searles, bobby daniel, chris masterson, eleanor whitmore, jazz mills, dana falconberry, stephen barber and me. jeremy and i have a great conversation about what it took to make my mountain, surviving cancer, how he couldn't cut it as a rancher, working with legends and much, much more. you can see jeremy perform my mountain at his record release show this friday, may 6th at strange brew in austin, tx. you can find out where and when he's performing by going to jeremynail.com. i hope you enjoy my conversation with jeremy as much as i did. let's get down!

hello friends. i hope you're doing well. it's been a strange weekend. i was knocked out by allergies and spent about 48 hours in bed sneezing, coughing and sleeping. i wrote a song with my friend amy before i crashed on sunday, so i'm still in the songwriting game. i'm actually in two right now. i'll post a link to my soundcloud page on the "how did i get here?" facebok page. 
my guests for episode 476 are dallas' real rock and roll band, the roomsounds! their gorgeous new album, elm st. just came out on friday (3/25) and they're heading out on a southeast, northeast, midwest tour starting this friday, april 1st in tuscaloosa al. go to theroomsounds.com to see if they're coming to a town near you. i caught up with sam and ryan when they were here for sxsw and we had a great conversation about living the underage dream/nightmare in l.a., the drink menu at the double-wide in dallas, recording at fame studios in muscle shoals al, living as a band in rehearsal spaces, condemned houses and a van, having an east coast attitude in the south, following their hearts to the south and much, much more! i hope you enjoy getting to know the roomsounds. i sure did. let's get down!

hello friends! i hope you're all doing well. i should be doing well. i'm spending the christmas week with my family in houston and these shows have all been lade in advance and i'm taking a legitimate week off from my work. i don't do that much. some weeks are slow with skyrocket, solo stuff or the podcast, but i never really just "unplug" for a week and not do any work. i'm looking forward to this break. hopefully, i'm enjoying it. my guests for episode 448 are americana darlings, the trishas! yes. i know they're not currently "super-active" as a band, but i have been trying to get them on the show since i started it. luckily they were playing some shows in new york, south texas and austin a few weeks ago and i got them to stop by bright and early one morning after a show. it was even more fun and hilarious than i imagined it would be. these are some of the most talented, hard working, prolific artists i know. they're also the most entertaining group of people to be around. i hope they work together more simply because something magical happens when they're together. i hope you enjoy my morning with the trishas as much as i did. let's get down!ciao! -jg

hello friends! i hope you're all flying high again! things are going well here at la casa de johnny. i have a great big show for you guys today. before we get to my conversation with moving panoramas, i have a quick chat with michelle faires, producer of "honky tonk heaven: the story of the broken spoke" a documentary about the legendary texas honky tonk. they've just started editing and they've started a kickstarter campaign to finish up their movie. michelle gives us an insight to the story, but you can check it out and give at kickstarter.com/brokenspokefilm do it!my guests for episode 427 are the amazing dreamgaze trio, moving panoramas! their gorgeous new album, one came out earlier this month. you can find one and fin out all about them at movingpanoramas.com leslie and rosie from the band came by a few weeks ago and we had an amazing conversation about leslie's life-changing, traumatic few months, turning heartache and confusion into beautiful art, teaching rosie music and becoming bandmates, fear of numbers, school of rock, shoegaze vs. dreamgaze, the making of one, custom earplugs vs. $1 earplugs and much, much more! leslie's story is harrowing, but what she was able to do musically not only made her feel better but it made the world a more beautiful place and for that i thank her and the rest of the band. let's get down!ciao! -jg

hello friends! i hope you all are ready for the first day of fall this wednesday. i am! i have a new jean jacket, a new sweater and i'm ready to layer my clothes and feel cool, dry air. guys, i want to let you know that i am playing a tribute to XTC this friday, sept. 25th at strange brew. my friend, jon greene has assembled a great house band and they're having many singers of not including stephen doster, seela, darin murphy, kris nelson, jon sanchez,bruce hughes, miles zuniga and more including yours truly. yes! i will be ther singing as well. the show starts at 8pm and proceeds go to benefit the SIMS foundation. get your tickets here. come out, it should be a good time!my guests for episode 416 are singer/songwriter duo, dawn & hawkes. they have a new album, yours and mine that comes out next friday, 10/2. they'll be playing a waterloo instore that day and playing a special show at the one world theater in austin, tx that night. anyway, i have been trying to get these guys on the show since i saw them on "the voice" last year. they played before skyrocket one night and i really loved their harmonies and their songs. anyway, i talked to them at a show a few months ago, they told me they'd come on when they put out their new album and BOOM! here we are. so, newlyweds, miranda and chris came by a little over a month ago and we sat down and talked about their wedding, their songwriting process, being a romantic/musical duo, their new album, yours and mine, their experience on the voice and much more. i had a great time getting to know these amazingly sweet and talented people. i'm sure you will too. let's get down!ciao! -jg
