hello friends of nature! i hope you're all living high on the hog and other weird phrases that i don't understand. i'm good. i had a weekend of playing with SKYROCKET!. we played a graduation party and the next night we played comicpalooza in houston. good times. i'm about to go over some songs because i'm sitting in with the great jeff plankenhorn tonight at strange brew. i'm looking forward to it. he's having me out because i'm taking over his tuesday residency this summer. i'm doing a couple of live podcasts in june and then playing and hosting a music showcase night in july and august. yes!!! if you live in austin, you should come out to our live podcast recording on tuesday, june 3rd at strange brew in austin. my guests will be suzanna choffel, trish murphy, jazz mils and elizabeth mcqueen. come out and be a part of this show!my guests for episode 277 are the amazingly talented amy lavere and will sexton! amy is a songwriter and amazing stand-up bass player. her new album, runaway's diary just came out today on archer records. the album is absolutely gorgeous. amy and will came by before they head out to the u.k. and the mid-west and west coast for a record release tour. i just met amy a few months ago and heard her and will play and i thought the sound that they made was beautiful. so, i reached out and finally got her in to find out what she's all about. will is a dear old friend of mine (almost 30 years) and one of the musicians/people that respect most in this world. they came by and we got into the whole thing, being a tour guide at sun studios, making records, touring as a couple and much, much more. i hope you enjoy our conversation as much as i did.ciao! -jg

Episode 256: Jolie Goodnight

Tuesday Mar 18, 2014

Tuesday Mar 18, 2014

hello my friends! i hope that you are all doing well. if you were in austin for sxsw, i hope you've made it home safely or are making your way home safely. woah! what an overwhelming experience that was. i am completely exhausted by the experience. this year had a very different feeling than any other. it was very uncomfortable and even before the tragic deaths, there seemed to be a feeling of heaviness in the air. very strange. i interviewed a lot of people. you'll be hearing those shows in the coming weeks. i hope you like them. my guest for episode 256 is the lovely and talented, jolie goodnight! i just met jolie when i was working on her mom's album a month or so ago. her mom is kimmie rhodes (who you might have heard on the show last fall) and her dad was music legend, joe gracey. anyway, i got a copy of her debut album, "goodnight gracey" when i left that day. when i got home and listened to it, i loved it. after i asked her to come on the show, i was looking at some of her videos on youtube and found out that she is also a showgirl and burlesque dancer with the popular troupe, the jigglewatts. anyway, we really hit it off and had a great conversation about everything we could think of. jolie is a great talent and a great hang. i hope you enjoy our conversation. i did.ciao! -jg

Episode 246: Gina Chavez

Tuesday Feb 11, 2014

Tuesday Feb 11, 2014

hello friends! i hope you're all winning the gold in your lives today. things are going well here. the weather keeps changing every day and now it's emergency cold with schools starting a couple of hours later for the 3rd time in in a month. not to talk about the weather, but man, it's weird when it changes from a high of 34 to a high of 77 to freezing  to sunny and 75 all in one week. weird. i've been busy working on a lot of different things lately. i'll keep you posted.  my guest for episode 246 is the talented and enchanting, gina chavez! gina's new album, UP. ROOTED comes out today, tuesday, february 11th 2014! the album is loaded with all the bad-ass latin jams you would expect from austin's "best latin artist". anyway, i had a great time getting to know gina through this podcast. i never knew about her charitable work, her 8 months in el salvador teaching young girls, nina arriba, a college fund that chavez co-founded for impoverished you women in el salvador. gina and i have a great conversation. we get to know what makes her tick and where all of that beautiful music comes from. i hope you enjoy getting to know gina. i sure did.ciao!

Friday Jan 10, 2014

hello friends! i hope you're all doing well. i am. i saw some music last night. i saw dan dyer debuting some new songs at the continental club gallery. his new songs were so different than what i've come to expect from dan. great songs. i'm looking forward to seeing what he does with them. after that i went to see sphynx at the mohawk. what a great show! they played outside and the place was packed. people were all dancing a getting down. there was even a couple of dudes smoking weed behind me. when people bust out the weed, that smell somehow makes the show feel right. they put on a GREAT show and i just love them. i highly suggest checking them out while they're on tour starting next week!my guest for episode 237 is the always entertaining, elizabeth mcqueen making her second appearance on the show. i read her blog last week about playing her last shows with asleep at the wheel and releasing her new e.p., the laziest remix. i thought, with such a gigantic life change going on, maybe we should sit down and catch up. well, we did and it was well worth it. elizabeth came by and talked about everything, her last shows with "the wheel", life off the road, house cleaning, working with the brothers lazaroff, collaborating with talented women, her release show on 1/11 at lambert's in austin, not smoking and much, much more. if you don't know elizabeth before this show, you will love her after you listen to it. please enjoy my talented and entertaining friend, elizabeth mcqueen.ciao! -jg

Episode 235: Mike Flanigin

Friday Jan 03, 2014

Friday Jan 03, 2014

happy new year everyone! i hope you had a safe and wonderful new years eve. i did. i played in houston with SKYROCKET! we helped a guy propose to his lady. i quit smoking... that totally sucks! i'm on my third day and i'm really starting to freak out. i hate it. i played last night and it was all i could think about. i know it gets easier, but this totally sucks.my guest for episode 235 is hammond B-3 organ master, mike flanigin. mike has had an incredible 2013. this year he played with jimmie vaughan at eric clapton's crossroads festival, he played with zz top at the montreaux jazz festival, he played with billy gibbons on his birthday in new york a couple of weeks ago along with will lee and anton fig of the david letterman band. his band, dupree, put out an album, nuestro camino that has garnered critical praise. his duo/trio shows at the continental club gallery are legendary and a "who's who" of special guests. to top it all off, mike flanigin is a really nice guy and and great hang. i hope you enjoy getting to know him as much as i did. ciao! -jg

Episode 230: Craig Marshall

Tuesday Dec 17, 2013

Tuesday Dec 17, 2013

hello my friends! i hope you're all doing well. things are good here. i'm going to do some christmas shopping today. going to the local record stores and buying music for family members. i'll be getting music that's in their taste range but something they haven't heard or heard of. i hope i can find something that my grandparents will like. it's kind of exciting to do this. i'll let you know how it goes. oh! if you're in austin this friday, december 20th, i'll be playing a solo show at the one-2-one bar from 6-7pm. it's an early show for your friday night. i hope to see you there!my guest for episode 230 is the great singer/songwriter, craig marshall. i've known craig since the 90's when i would see his band, the lucky strikes. the lucky strikes are still out there playing and doing it, but in the early 2000's craig asserted himself as a songwriter and started a solo career to coincide with the lucky strikes. what followed was a series of great solo records that found his songs covered by all kinds of people and started his reputation as a songwriter's songwriter. his latest album, hiding in the doorway was produced by robert harrison (cotton mather, future clouds and radar) and brings in more of a country flavor. anyway, craig came over a while back and we sat down and got into it. it's a great conversation and i hope you enjoy it as much as i did. ciao! -jg
