Episode 263: ARP / Bully

Friday Apr 11, 2014

Friday Apr 11, 2014

hello friends! i hope you're all doing well. i am. i have an unusual friday off. lucky me! i have a couple of interviews today but after 5, i'm done. i had a great show last night at one-2-one bar here in austin. i celebrated what would have been my 20th wedding anniversary (had we not divorced almost 10 years ago) by playing songs that related to my "marriage experience". i jammed with my old friends, ryan and brad at the end and it was a good time. oh!!!! a friend made me a replica of the painting that hangs above scatman cruthers' in "the shining". yes. i have a pimp bedroom now. episode 263 is another sxsw double-header (only this time, without the background noise) my guests are first up, from brooklyn, ny, arp! arp is one man's brilliant musical vision. that man is alexis georgopoulos, a art school kid who's tried his hand at rock and roll as an art form and made some beautiful music/noise. his new album, more, is reminiscent of the brian eno pop albums of the early 70's. we had a great conversation! our second guests for this double-header are nashville's, bully! an incredible band led by an incredible singer/recording engineer/producer, alicia. alicia and drummer stewart (copeland) came by the apt. during sxsw and we had a great talk about recording, running live sound, being a band, being a woman in the music engineering world an much, much more. i hope you enjoy these conversations as much as i did. ciao! -jg

"get hip baby! you like metal?"hello my friends!i hope the world is going along with your plans for life. i'm doing well. i had a great night last night. i hosted and played at a benefit here in town for the mccormack family who lost their home in the floods on halloween. it was a great night with bill carter, rosie flores, gabriel rhodes, patricia vonne alejandro escovedo, kacy crowly, matt mccormack, william harries graham, marlon sexton and many, many more came out, played and raised some dough for the family. if you want to find out how YOU can help the mccormack family go to their "go fund me" site http://www.gofundme.com/53iuw8 thank you.my guest for episode 245 is the incredibly talented and entertaining erin ivey! this is erin's 2nd appearance on the show. her brilliant new cd/dvd, whisper of the moon comes out next tuesday, february 11th 2014. she recorded this album live with the tosca string quartet and filmed it. the album is gorgeous and you get to watch it and feel like you're there with the dvd. she's having a release party on thursday february 13th at the belmont in austin, tx. you're in austin i urge you to go see this beautiful production with erin and a string quartet. gorgeous. erin came by and we got to talk and catch up and she talked about how she made the album and challenges and rewards that went along with  working outside the box. i hope you enjoy my conversation with erin. i sure did.ciao! -jg

Friday Jan 31, 2014

hello my friends! i hope you're all doing well. i'm good. i think i'm going for a run this morning... i haven't run since it's been so cold. i hate running in the cold. after my run, i'm heading out to houston to play at the house of blues with skyrocket tonight. i went to a fun party last night and i got to see my dear, old friend, will play. the health alliance for austin musicians (HAAM) was honoring my friend shane matt for all of his work with the organization both raising money and through his dental practice. i want to remind you that i will be playing the mccormack family benefit next thursday, february 6th at strange brew in austin, tx. the event is from 6pm to midnight. special guests include, alejandro escovedo, kacy crowley, bill carter me and many, many more. if you're in austin, come out. here's a link http://holdmyticket.com/event/159592my guest for episode 243 is musician, author, painter and all-around artist, jesse sublett. jesse is one of those guys i've been around a few times over the last 20 years, but i've never really gotten to know him at all. i knew he was in the 70's punk band, the skunks along with jon dee graham and i knew he was an artist and had survived cancer. i had no idea that he wrote documentaries for the history channel or that he had written so many books or that in the 70's his girlfriend had been murdered in their home while he was playing a gig. he is easily one of the coolest people i have ever met. this episode is just part 1 of our conversations. i'm reading his memoir/true crime book, "never the same again" and it's absolutely fascinating. i hope you enjoy my conversation with jesse. i did.ciao! -jg

Episode 230: Craig Marshall

Tuesday Dec 17, 2013

Tuesday Dec 17, 2013

hello my friends! i hope you're all doing well. things are good here. i'm going to do some christmas shopping today. going to the local record stores and buying music for family members. i'll be getting music that's in their taste range but something they haven't heard or heard of. i hope i can find something that my grandparents will like. it's kind of exciting to do this. i'll let you know how it goes. oh! if you're in austin this friday, december 20th, i'll be playing a solo show at the one-2-one bar from 6-7pm. it's an early show for your friday night. i hope to see you there!my guest for episode 230 is the great singer/songwriter, craig marshall. i've known craig since the 90's when i would see his band, the lucky strikes. the lucky strikes are still out there playing and doing it, but in the early 2000's craig asserted himself as a songwriter and started a solo career to coincide with the lucky strikes. what followed was a series of great solo records that found his songs covered by all kinds of people and started his reputation as a songwriter's songwriter. his latest album, hiding in the doorway was produced by robert harrison (cotton mather, future clouds and radar) and brings in more of a country flavor. anyway, craig came over a while back and we sat down and got into it. it's a great conversation and i hope you enjoy it as much as i did. ciao! -jg

Episode 227: Kimmie Rhodes

Thursday Dec 05, 2013

Thursday Dec 05, 2013

hello friends! i hope you're all doing well. it's cold here. my gig got cancelled for tomorrow because of the weather. that's the third one this month! lame. anyway, i joined a songwriting game and i have a song i need to write and turn in. i'll be playing in a songwriter in the round next thursday, dec. 12th at the one-2-one bar in austin, tx. if you're in town, come out. i know drew smith hosts it, but i have no idea who else is playing. come out. maybe i'll play my new song.my guest for episode 227 is legendary singer/songwriter, kimmie rhodes! i had never met kimmie, but when i left her house after this, i feel like had made a friend. she is an incredible story teller. i went out to her place a couple of weeks ago and she showed me her studio where she's recorded her last few albums including her latest, "covers". after we got to know each other a bit we went and sat in her office and she told me about growing up in lubbock, making her way to austin, meeting her soul-mate joe gracey, recording with willie & waylon and the boys, not going nashville, working with her son gabe, writing plays, producing films and much, much more. i had a great time hanging out and getting to know kimmie. i think you will too. ciao! -jg

Episode 225: Kyle Ellison

Sunday Dec 01, 2013

Sunday Dec 01, 2013

hello my friends! i hope you all had a great thanksgiving and were able to be with loved ones. i was. so i'm thankful for that. sorry this episode is coming out a couple of days late. i got some kind of stomach virus on tuesday and then thanksgiving came up. i was out of town for a few days and when i got back yesterday, i slept for 14 hours. i feel much better today. it's warm outside and i'm going to hang out with my dogs for a bit and catch up on some more rest. happy sunday!my guest for episode 225 is musician/producer/visual artist and now record label owner, kyle ellison. kyle and i have known each other since about 1990 when he was in pariah and i was in panjandrum. in the years that have passed, he's played with the butthole surfers, the meat puppets, rocky erickson and many more. he's made documentaries for rocky, the arc angels and many more. he's produced records for ainjel emme, popular culture, tristan rudat and is currently working on an album for laura scarborough. he's also just started a label. we have a great conversation about his journey through this business, getting through the loss of his brother, staying open to opportunities and much, much more. i hope you enjoy our conversation. i did.ciao! -jg

Episode 216: Dave Prewitt

Tuesday Oct 29, 2013

Tuesday Oct 29, 2013

hello people! i hope you're all doing well. i've been playing a lot this week with skyrocket.we  played last night (monday) we don't normally play corporate parties during the week, but this week, we have two which is great. the one we played last night had a mechanical bull. it was an insurance company, so there were about 6 people who rode it during the six hour party. a mechanical bull really seems a lot easier to ride when you're watching people do it... much harder when you do it yourself. i've ridden one before. my aunt actually got married during the "urban cowboy" craze and had one at their wedding. i think me and my friends monopolized it. i was 11.my guest for episode 216 is videographer, dave prewitt. you can find dave's work by going to davetv.org. i've been friends with him since the early 90's when he had two extremely popular access tv music shows, "rawtime" and "capzeyez". i watched those shows every chance i had. i was on the shows a few times and always had a blast. anyway, dave did tons of interviews with locals bands, national touring bands and he was the last person to interview bill hicks. dave has always been involved with exposing people to new music and helping bands get "out there" in front of people. you can see a lot of his work if you go to davetv.org. i enjoyed hearing the stories of access and how he's transitioned to the internet age. i'm sure you will too. ciao! -jg

Hello friends! i hope this episode finds you well. this episode was supposed to come out last friday, 6/28, but i had solo gigs, skyrocket gigs, podcast interviews, slow hotel internet connections and general insanity. sorry we're late, but we have an awesome show for you today! also, a quick heads-up, i'll be participating in a live podcast called, "the soundtrack series" at the long center in austin, tx this saturday, july 6th. check it out. it's really cool and i'm very honored to have been asked to be a part of it. here's a link: www.soundtrackseries.com
we have a big show about rock and roll for you today. my guests for episode 184 are the band, death and new york's, wild adriatic! first up is death. death has an incredible story. so incredible that they have had a documentary made about them that opened last friday, 6/28. the documentary tells the story of three brothers in the early 70's in detroit, playing a style of music way ahead of it's time. a style of music we would come to know as PUNK. my friend bevis, who works with the band, invited me out last week to see a special screening of the documentary and watch a special performance by the band. the movie is amazing, their performance was awesome and i got to hang out with them and they're great guys going through an exceptionally unique situation and experience. i got to sit down with the guys the day before the movie opened i think you're really going them. here's a link to the trailer and the story. you should go see this movie... http://abandcalleddeath.com/
also on the show, upstate new york rock and roll trio, wild adriatic. i first heard them last year when a friend of mine started working with them. i love their raw rock and roll and their energy. i was really excited when i found out they had time to stop by for a chat while they were on a u.s. tour earlier this month. we talked about their evolution and journey, small town in upstate new york, going from quartet to trio, making albums, touring and much more. i loved getting to hang out with these guys and i enjoyed our conversation. i'm sure you will too. they're great band made-up of sweet guys. check out their music and videos here, http://www.wildadriatic.com/
