Episode 247: Bobby Landgraf

Friday Feb 14, 2014

Friday Feb 14, 2014

"i'm an overnight sensation... it was just a really long night."hello lovers! happy valentine's day. is valentine's day real? it's never been a thing for me. of course, no one ever sends me flowers, chocolates or takes me to a fancy dinner and finally puts in the work for my sex and/or love. so basically, it's just friday to me. i saw erin ivey's record release show last night at the belmont here in austin. what a great show! her new cd/dvd whisper of the moon is an incredible live recording with erin and the tosca string quartet. i recommend it! i'm getting my shit together to head out of town a little later today for some weekend shows with SKYROCKET!. i'm driving alone this weekend, so i'm looking for some good podcasts and maybe and audiobook. my guest for episode 247 is the amazingly talented and incredibly cool, bobby landgraf a.k.a. bobby rock! i've known bobby for a long time and always thought the world of him as both a musician and a dude. i was a huge fan of his band, gahdzilla motor company. anyway, bobby's band, honky is always working and now he's joined the band down which is fronted by pantera's phil anselmo. bobby's story is very real and ultimately very triumphant. his humility and focus on his work has really paid off for him. that makes me proud. i hope you enjoy my conversation with bobby. i did.ciao! -jg

Episode 233: The Roosevelts

Friday Dec 27, 2013

Friday Dec 27, 2013

hello friends! i hope you all had a wonderful christmas even if you DON'T celebrate it. for most, it's a day off. you can't go to the grocery store, so if you don't have someone's christmas dinner to attend, you're relegated to chinese or the 7-11 sandwich selection. my family gifts of music i bought in local record stores seemed to be a success. not in that everyone actually cared, but at least i did it. i hope they enjoy their music. i'm just glad that the family was together. that was special. also, i got a crock pot! so i'm sure you'll be hearing about my slow-cooking adventures in the weeks to come. anyway, i hope your christmas was everything you hoped for. my guests for episode 233 are james mason and jason kloess otherwise known as, the roosevelts. i didn't know them but, i saw their video online one morning a couple of weeks ago and i thought it was great. i looked them up and it turns out, i know their manager. so i wrote her that morning and by that evening they were in my apartment and we were chatting the night away. it turns out they're really great guy and we had a great talk about med school, high-finance, a grandfather who invented many things, dude ranches, riding a bike across the u.s.a., sixth street, lessons gleaned from producer dwight baker and much, much more. i really enjoyed getting to know these guys. i'm sure will too.ciao! -jg

Episode 161: Danny Crooks

Tuesday Apr 09, 2013

Tuesday Apr 09, 2013

hello my friends! i hope you're all feeling fantastic and loving the spring. i sure am. i had a great weekend of shows and good times with good friends. while we were in houston i had the chance to do a podcast with my friend, fellow podcaster and stand-up comic, rob mungle. look for that next week.   so, an all around fabulous weekend. hey! if you're interested and you live in austin or houston, SKYROCKET! will be playing some shows this week. you can find out where and when by going to skyrockettheband.com and checking the dates page.
my guest for episode 161 is my outspoken old friend and former club owner, danny crooks. danny was the was the owner of steamboat and the patriarch of a scene that was born out of his club. these bands included, breedlove, vallejo, bob schneider's various bands, sister 7, will sexton, billy white and many, many more. danny is retired from the club scene and taken his kingdom to a small town on the outskirts of austin. i went out to danny's place to sit down and chat about his life and document a specific scene that took place in austin in the 90's... and i was a part of it. my band, mr. rocket baby started our thursday night residency in may of 1993. so, we talk about his wild journey through the bar business and his life. i have a great affection for danny and i miss sitting around shooting the shit with him, so it was nice to hang out again. i hope you enjoy this conversation. i did.
ciao! -jg
