hello friends! i am up early this friday morning getting my shit together to head out of town with SKYROCKET! for three days. if you're in houston tomorrow, saturday 4/5/14, we'll be at the continental club. come out! it's a good time. this week i've spent a lot of time with comics. monday i played with sweat and lotion at the cap city comedy club for the live charlie hodge show, tuesday i talked to john tole for the podcast. if you listen to the show, you'll know we talked a year ago and it's the only episode i accidentally erased... this one is so good, i can't wait fo you to hear it. it'll be up in a month or so. yesterday i recorded a theme song for my pal, lucas molandes and his new podcast, "good grief". it's a sweet electronic dream pop jam. we had a good time. lots of laughs. i hope you're laughing.episode 261 is another sxsw 2014 double-header! first up, angelo moore and the brand new step! i have been a fan of angelo's since the 80's when i first heard fishbone. angelo has been making solo music for a number of years now since fishbone split up. he's back with an amazing band, the brand new step. they have a new album out and i got to see them play live and it was amazing. i loved talking to angelo and his bandmates. sadly it was a little too loud, but hopefully you'll enjoy it. i did. my second guest for episode 261 is the talented singer/songwriter/musician, kayce laine! kayce was on a couple of epsides ago with joseph king. she was here playing keys and bas with him. she gave me some songs to listen to and i found out she was doing an instore while she was here, so i went. we had a chat at a wine bar. kayce is a great songwriter and a great musician. when we met, it felt like i had met one of my tribe. her e.p. , lucid is on bandcap. check it out! i hope you enjoy this sxsw double-header. let's get down!ciao! -jf

Episode 216: Dave Prewitt

Tuesday Oct 29, 2013

Tuesday Oct 29, 2013

hello people! i hope you're all doing well. i've been playing a lot this week with skyrocket.we  played last night (monday) we don't normally play corporate parties during the week, but this week, we have two which is great. the one we played last night had a mechanical bull. it was an insurance company, so there were about 6 people who rode it during the six hour party. a mechanical bull really seems a lot easier to ride when you're watching people do it... much harder when you do it yourself. i've ridden one before. my aunt actually got married during the "urban cowboy" craze and had one at their wedding. i think me and my friends monopolized it. i was 11.my guest for episode 216 is videographer, dave prewitt. you can find dave's work by going to davetv.org. i've been friends with him since the early 90's when he had two extremely popular access tv music shows, "rawtime" and "capzeyez". i watched those shows every chance i had. i was on the shows a few times and always had a blast. anyway, dave did tons of interviews with locals bands, national touring bands and he was the last person to interview bill hicks. dave has always been involved with exposing people to new music and helping bands get "out there" in front of people. you can see a lot of his work if you go to davetv.org. i enjoyed hearing the stories of access and how he's transitioned to the internet age. i'm sure you will too. ciao! -jg

hello love muffins! i hope you're doing well. digging into the week. i am. it's been pretty cold the last couple of days, so i haven't been running. it makes me feel lazy. there's a treadmill in the gym at my apartments, but i just can't do the treadmill. i get really bored, i can't tell how far i'm really going and the whole time, i just wish i was outside. hopefully it'll warm up. i saw paula nelson play last night with special guest, todd v. wolfson. it was really good. i think i'm going to try to get her on the show. i was going to ask her last night, but i had to leave before they finished. she was really good and seems like a sweetheart. i'll keep you updated...
my guest for episode 157 is composer/arranger/multi-instrumentalist, stephen grisham barber. i love stephen. i met him at some point in the late 90's when he was working with alejandro escovedo. i have hung out with him from time to time and i've always wanted to sit down and talk to him about his life and career. i asked him to come by and tell me about his journey, and being the sweetheart that he is, he did. we talk about his talented family, including author john grisham, growing up in west texas, making music with the first eric johnson vehicle, the electromagnets, moving to new york and working with david byrne, keith richards, gilberto gil and many more. we talk about all of stephen's amazing projects in classical, jazz, rock and film scoring. stephen isn't just an incredible artist, he's a great hang. i hope you enjoy our conversation. i did.

Friday Jan 25, 2013

Friday Jan 25, 2013

"i partied with godley and creme!"
hello lovelies! i hope you are all doing well. i am. i played with SKYROCKET! last night at the house of blues in houston for a corporate thing. it was a great time. i love playing there. now, i have the weekend off from playing and i have no idea what to do with myself... i just finished an incredible audiobook called, "i want my mtv" about the first 10 years of mtv as told by over 400 people who were around for it. from artists to mtv & music executives, managers, video directors.  it's really incredible and i highly recommend it. read it or listen to it!
my guest for episode 140 is singer/songwriter and now the star of his very own documentary, kevin gant. i first heard kevin over 20 years ago when i moved to austin. i saw him on access tv. i was blown away. i became a fan and later we became friends and played shows together. i have always thought the world about kevin. his demeanor is almost angelic. then,  in the mid 90's, kevin disappeared. then a couple of weeks ago, i saw this documentary by the duplass brothers called, "kevin" and it's about kevin gant. the story was incredible so i asked him to come in and talk to me about what his life has been like. he's been on an incredible journey and i was so glad that he was able to come and talk about leaving the air force to become a musician and his crazy life afterwards. it's very heartwarming, i get emotional and kevin talks to me about his epic life. i hope you enjoy our conversation. i did.
ciao! -jg
