Episode 128: Erin Ivey

Friday Dec 14, 2012

Friday Dec 14, 2012

i love eydie gormet!
hello friends! i hope this podcast finds you well. how is your christmas shopping coming along? how is your chanukah? i am hoping that can finish all of my shopping this weekend... i don't know if i will. my gig tonight is literally across the street from a mall. i think after soundcheck, i'll hit the mall for some shopping and maybe i'll finish.
my guest for episode 128 is the incredibly talented and extremely cool, erin ivey. i first heard erin on a television commercial three years ago. i liked her voice and saw her interviewed on tv and was happy to see her make some waves because her talent shined in that commercial. i've never really talked to her, so i was glad to see that she was putting out a new album and so i invited her to come chat. we talk about her humble beginnings in annapolis md, her travels to austin, then portland, then back to austin, her inability to spin the right records at a party, her husband's ability to spin the right record at a party and soooo much more. i hope you enjoy our conversation. i did.

it's black friday! stay away from the malls!
hello people! i hope you all had a happy thanksgiving. i'm writing this on wednesday morning before i leave for my thanksgiving. we have a big show for you and i wanted to make sure i got things wrapped up in time to put it out. we have three different guests for you today... first, i talk to our very first guest, suzanna choffel about her experience on television's, "the voice", hurricane sandy and how nora jones will not replace me as her friend. second, the band, residual kid pays me a visit. they're a band made up of two 12 year olds and a 14 year old... and they totally rock! i love their music and they are totally funny and cute. finally, i sit down with brian purington from the band, my education and he tells me about the band who is just about to release their 8th album!!! i hope you enjoy these conversations. i did. also, i hope you're having a great thanksgiving holiday!

hello everyone! i hope you're taking summer's denouement in stride. i'm definitely feeling some "end of summer sadness". one way to get rid of the summer blues is to come see me and my friend joseph king play at the volstead lounge this sunday, august 26th. the volstead lounge is located at 1500 e. 6th st in austin texas. the show starts at 9. i'll play a set, joseph will play a set and then we'll play a set together. so come out to the volstead lounge on sunday and celebrate summer's end with the johnny and joseph show!
my guest for episode 97 is my old friend, actor/writer, karl anderson. i hadn't seen karl in a few months, when out of the blue i saw his face pop up in front of me at a gig last week. i was so surprised! karl and i have been friends for almost 18 years and have spent a lot of time talking art, music, books and of course, movies. plus, karl got me into bukowski. i'll never forget that! karl is a working actor here in austin. he's been in a lot of tv shows and movies. he was recently in a movie that got a lot of attention at the festivals over the last year called, "strings". i just saw it and it's amazing. it also stars one of our former guests, billy harvey. anyway, i'm really glad i got to sit down with karl and talk. i hope you enjoy it. i did.

THUNDER!!!!!! THUNDER!!!!
hello beautiful people! this is a GREAT show!!!!! i had a great weekend.  i played in houston and in oklahoma city. we played wes welker's wedding party in OKC on saturday. he sang with us. i tell the story of our experience on the show. then, after the show i got a message from cy curnin from the fixx. it's extremely surreal and i put it on the show as well. check it out. it's crazy! you can see the pic of wes and i on our facebook page . while you're there, you should push the "like" button.
our guest for episode 86 is the incredibly talented guitar player from dashboard confessional/solo artist, john lefler. i've known john for a long time because his big brother, bill, was the drummer of goudie. anyway, john just released his second solo e.p., "shout fire", which was produced by bill. i was so glad that john was able to stop by and we could have this conversation. we talk about the significance of the song, "sister christian" to his musical upbringing, being in a band with no name, naked shows at the hole in the wall, getting in dashboard confessional and being able to draw wieners no matter what! this is one of my top 5 favorites. i really hope you like it.
ciao, jg

who's getting down now?
check out this bad-ass clothing store and hair salon in south austin, filin'
i'm feeling a little crazy. i don't think i slept enough last night. i'm running behind. i have to put this interview out, do an interview with john lefler, go let my dogs out, pack, get my friend paul and leave to houston and oklahoma city for a weekend of shows. if you live in houston, come out to the bronze peacock room at the house of blues for SKYROCKET!. i got some good news this morning. i was invited to be on the whiskey brothers podcast tonight in houston before my show. it's a great podcast hosted by three very funny houston comics including my pal, rob mungle. i'll let you know when it happens.
today's show has a different intro. i went to visit my cousin emily at her store, filin'. while i was there, we recorded the intro for this show together. some people posted some questions on facebook. we talk about what girls talk about when they're with their friends and boners. i hope you enjoy it. we have fun being silly together.
my guest for episode 85 is brandon kinder from the rocketboys. i got to see the rocketboys the other night. i was blown away by the band and so after the show, i asked brandon to come by and be on the show. he did. he is a really sweet guy. the music is beautiful. i highly recommend seeing them live. it's a totally amazing experience. brandon is a very nice and humble guy. i hope you enjoy our conversation. i did.

Friday Jul 06, 2012

another 4th of july has passed and all i have to show for it is a burned out sparkler and a new neurotic obsession with my balls.
hey everyone! i hope you're doing well. i had a conversation at a party last night that left me with the burning question, how long should my balls be? well, i'm concerned. apparently long-balls are a turn-off. do you think there's such a thing as testiplasty? get back to me.
my guest for episode 83 is austin radio personalty b-doe! b-doe is a disc jockey on klbj fm here in austin and a big supporter of live music and musicians. he got his start on the austin music network, got another tv show, which he also co-created, and eventually ended up on the radio. i've always gotten along great with him. he is a sweet guy and as i said, a great supporter and fan of music. i was glad b-doe could come by the apartment and we could talk about how he got here. enjoy it! i did.
ciao! =jg
