Episode 51: Akina Adderley

Friday Mar 09, 2012

Friday Mar 09, 2012

today is the first day of sxsw. you might actually be listening to this podcast on your way to austin. i'm actually getting my shit together to leave town for a couple of days to play some shows. here at "how did i get here?" we've been setting up interviews for the week.... so look for some sxsw shows coming in the next couple of weeks.
my guest for episode 51 is the lovely and talented, akina adderley. i first heard about her when members of SKYROCKET! worked on a pink floyd tribute show. she was the girl who sang "great gig in the sky"... i heard so much about her from them that her name stuck. anyway, jessica set-up our interview and i finally got to meet the fabulous akina. we sat outside with my dogs and she told me about growing up in an extremely talented and successful musical family, her grandfather was cornetist, nat adderley, her father is pianist, nat adderley jr. and her mother is singer-actress, janet adderley. she went to the actual "fame" high school, she teaches, she writes, she records & performs with her band, akina adderley & the vintage playboys and she is a great hang. i hope you enjoy my conversation with akina. i did.

Episode 39: Tameca Jones

Wednesday Jan 18, 2012

hey everyone! we got mentioned in the do512.com blog. check it out! http://do512blog.com/2012/01/16/how-did-i-get-here-conversations-with-musicians/
my guest for episode 39 is jazz/soul singer, tameca jones. i just met tameca a few weeks ago at a christmas benefit where we both performed. i loved her voice and the arrangements of her christmas songs. tameca is a lot newer at this than her singing lets on. you wouldn't think so by her amazing voice and extremely cool, gritty and soulful arrangements of standards and more modern rock and pop songs by, tears for fears, nirvana and many more. tameca came over the other day and got to know each other a little better. she is a sweet, smart and very very funny lady. i really enjoyed talking to and getting to know her.  i hope you enjoy our conversation. i did. ciao! -jg

my friend, bruce machart's second book, "men in the making",  came out yesterday! it's a collection of short stories and he's currently on tour promoting it by doing readings at bookstores. he's coming over tonight and we're going to do a podcast, so you'll get to hear from him soon! this is our first remote episode using the new field recorder. there were birds everywhere so the interview has this tropical feel...
episode 19 features my friend, johnny vogelsang. i don't really know when i met johnny. i remember being around him when we both lived in houston in '89 and '90. after i moved to austin and started mr. rocket baby, our bands did a lot of shows together. even a residency for around a year at the famous, steamboat on 6th street. johnny's a working bass player/teacher/student. in this episode, johnny v. tells us how he got here and i hope you enjoy it.

Episode 7: Kat Edmonson

Wednesday Sep 07, 2011

Wednesday Sep 07, 2011

hello friends! i have to apologize for not posting any new episodes last week. sorry. i had to postpone the david' garza (don't worry ladies, we're having a make-up session next week!) episode and joseph king and i couldn't meet up. it was going to be "mexican week". i was really excited to have a theme. sadly, i have to do them another time. i went out and saw the lossy coils last night which features my friends, ian moore and matt harris. it was AMAZING! i was in an earlier incarnation of this band and i stepped out to make my album, "el payaso". i needed to make that album, but i have always regretted leaving the lossy coils. i have had a lot of bands and i spent many years on the road with someone that i fit perfectly with socially. his name is einar pedersen. outside of einar, i have only been in two bands that the whole band, personality wise, worked perfectly. this is one of them. anyway, it was great to see ian and matt. i love the music they're making together. they will be here over the next couple of days and they're coming to do the podcast!
episode 7 features kat edmonson. kat is extremely talented, she is very smart and she has worked really hard and seized the opportunities presented to her and in her short career, she has managed to release a socially conscious song that had hundreds of thousands downloads, put out an album that had a song licensed a few times for tv shows and was hand-picked by lyle lovett to open his summer tour in 2010 and she joined him on the jay leno show for a duet. i had a great time talking to her and i'm glad to have made a new friend. i hope you enjoy our conversation. ciao! -jg
